The Epworth M. E. Church of Sheridan township was a beautiful structure erected
in time for a dedication service in the spring of 1893.
Neither money or time was spared to make it a building to be
desired and the county to be proud of. The
Epworth M. E. Church was situated three miles east of the Amherst
Center school house and about four miles southwest of Cleghorn on
the southwest corner of Mr. E. Pierce’s farm. Mr. Pierce gave
the society an acre of land for church purposes.. The members
of this M. E. church were known as the Bryant class and they were
earnest, worthy, Christian people. Many
people from those parts attended the Dedicatory service, rejoicing in
their good fortune in having such a beautiful edifice free from debt in
which the people could meet to worship God. The Epworth
Church – Its Dedication and the Services that will be held there hereafter.
The Epworth M. E. church was dedicated April 16, by Rev. J. W. Southwell, of
Sioux City. The day was fine and a large congregation gathered to listen to a
fine sermon. Rev. Southwell gave the cost of the new church, it having been
$2,057.15 and the amount that must be raised to pay off the indebtedness was
$675 and that amount was soon raised and the church was dedicated free from
debt. Rev. Southwell is the right man in the right place for such work.
Credit is due to Rev. T. E. Carter and too much praise cannot be given the
Marcus choir. They rendered some very fine music. The pastor, Rev. A. J. Langdell, with all the class wish THE TIMES
to return their thanks for the help that has been granted them in building
this fine church. Rev. Langdell will preach at the Epworth church April 28 at
2:30 p.m. and in the evening he will give a temperance lecture. Sunday school
every Sunday at 1:30.
