The institutions were listed by location and are as follows: Anamosa - Penitentiary Council Bluffs - School for deaf & dumb Clarinda - Insane asylum Eldora - Boys reformatory Fort Madison - Penitentiary Glenwood - Schools for feeble minded children Vinton - School for the blind. The only information recorded for institutionalized persons using the standard census format was name, age, sex, race, marital status, and birthplace. All other data columns were blank. The towns/townships from which they came were written as section headings. The institution in which the person resided was written in the family/dwelling columns as an abbreviation of the institution's location. Because the home towns/townships and the institutions did not follow the standard census format, the unused columns of "Religion" and "Occupation" were used by the transcriber to list the person's home town/township and where they were institutionalized, respectively. ======================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================== CENSUS-YEAR: 1895 STATE: Iowa COUNTY: Madison DIVISION: Institutions ENUMERATOR: [unknown] ENUM DATE: 1 Jan 1895 -
