C. H. POWELL was born in New York City on June 23, 1822 and worked as a ship carpenter there until 1845. In that year he moved to Wisconsin and worked in mills and the milling business until 1856, when he moved to Winneshiek County, Iowa, and operated a fanning mill in partnership with a brother. He farmed in Allamakee County, Iowa, from 1859 to 1865, operated another fanning mill until 1868, then moved to Minnesota and farmed until he again moved to Cass County, Iowa, and purchased an eighty-acre farm in Section 9 of Brighton Township. He improved this farm and lived there until he sold it and moved to Marne in 1882, where he entered into a partnership with Henry Buch in the operation of a hardware store here in town. C. H. Powell Married Betsey Barney in Wisconsin in 1848; she died in 1876. He married Miss M. Marvin here in Brighton Township. He was the father of ten children, but none of them remained in Cass County.
