JOHN McEACHIM was born in Massachusetts on June 10, 1848. The family moved to Canada when John was young, but he returned to Massachusetts on June 10, 1848. The family moved to Canada when John was young, but he returned to Massachusetts when his father died and opened a drug store. John McEachim moved to Door County in northeast Wisconsin in 1871 and operated another drug store prior to moving to Marne, Iowa, in 1876. Upon his arrival in Marne, he rented a warehouse and engaged in the grain business and soon built his own warehouse. The business grew and Mr. McEachim replaced his buildings with a steam elevator in 1880, but it was destroyed by fire in August, 1881. He then built an elevator operated by horse-power. His operations included the elevator, corn cribs, and the coalyard for his fuel retailing business. In the 1880's John McEachim shipped an average of 250 railroad cars of grain from Marne annually. He was one of the three original trustees of the Presbyterian Church in Marne, which was founded in 1882.
