WILLIAM FUDGE was born in Washington County, Virginia, on May 21, 1817. At age thirty-one, he moved to Illinois and lived there for five years, then moved to Jasper County, Iowa, and farmed there for approximately sixteen years. He moved to Cass County, Iowa in the spring of 1871, and purchased a two hundred acre tract of land in Section 31 in the southwestern corner of Brighton Township, plus seventy acres of land in Washington Township. William Fudge was married three times. By his first wife Elizabeth Thompson, he had nine children. His second wife, Mrs. Mary Ann Dawson, bore him six children. By his third wife, Sarah Ann Matheny, he fathered five children - David, Luella, Ora, Wilbur, and Clara. The only survivor of this family is Luella, the widow of E. L. Pardee, a longtime businessman in Marne. Mrs. Pardee, now age 97, is a lifetime resident of the Marne community and the oldest living person from the town of Marne.
