AARON BYRD was born in Indiana and was the son of James L. Byrd, who was a native of Kentucky. James L. Byrd raised his family in Indiana but, in 1852, the Byrds traveled west looking for a suitable tract of land to claim. After putting in a crop in Wapello County, Iowa, James Byrd, his son Abraham, and a neighbor traveled through Oskaloosa, Des Moines, Adel and then west and down the valley of the Nishnabotna River until they staked out a claim on the bottomland of Buck Creek. They returned to Wapello County and the entire family returned west, Where the 1,000-acre claim was purchased for $125. James L. Byrd and his son, Abraham, settled on the portion of this land in Pymosa Township. Aaron Byrd settled on Section 36 of Brighton Township in what was the western part of the family claim. Aaron Byrd later departed Brighton Township for Fillmore County, Nebraska, although most of his family remained in Pymosa Township.
