Civil War Union Soldiers who served from Calhoun County, Iowa
ATHEY, John William – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born in Indiana, but a resident of Lake City, Iowa at age 25 when he enlisted Aug. 15, 1862. He was taken prisoner Dec. 30, 1862 at Shady Grove, Tennessee, paroled, and mustered out June 5, 1865 at Washington, D. C. He was born in Tippecanoe, Indiana, joined the G. A. R., Redding Post #6, and died Dec. 29, 1899 in Ringgold County, Iowa.
BEEBE, Charles W. – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born about 1843 in Indiana, while at age 19 and a resident of Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa, he enlisted Aug. 22, 1862. He was killed in action Oct 5, 1864 at Allatoona, Georgia and buried in the National Cemetery at Marietta, GA, section C, grave 815.
BEEBE, George W. – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born about 1841 in Indiana and a resident of Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa on Aug. 15, 1862 as a 6th Corporal. He mustered in on Sept. 3, 1862, was taken prisoner on Dec. 30, 1862 at Shady Grove, Tennessee, paroled, promoted to 4th Corporal, then 3rd Corporal on Jan. 2, 1864. He was promoted to 2nd Corporal, taken prisoner on Oct. 5, 1864 at Allatoona, George, paroled, and mustered out June 5, 1865 at Washington, D. C.
CRAWFORD, Howison C. – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born in Jamaica about 1835 and living in Lake City, Iowa, Calhoun County when he enlisted Aug. 22, 1862 at 3rd Sergeant. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant Apr. 9, 1863 and 2nd Lieutenant Aug. 7, 1864. He was taken prisoner Oct 5, 1864 at Allatoona, Georgia, paroled, promoted to Captain on Jan. 7, 1865, and mustered out June 5, 1865.
GRAY, Nelson – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born in Ohio about 1839 and lived in Lake City, Iowa on Aug. 15, 1862. He was mustered in on Sep. 3, 1862 and mustered out June 5, 1865 at Washington, D. C.
GRAY, Oscar – served in Company H, 10th Iowa Infantry. He was a resident of Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa when he enlisted at age 19 on Aug 23, 1861. He was wounded mortally on Oct. 3, 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi, died of his wounds on Oct. 6, 1862 in Corinth, MS, and buried in National Cemetery, Corinth, MS, section B, grave 71. He was born in 1842 in Michigan.
HUTCHINSON, Norman R. – served in Company H, 10th Iowa Infantry. He was a resident of Calhoun County, Iowa when he enlisted at age 29 on Aug. 23, 1861 as 7th Corporal and mustered out Sept. 28, 1864 in Kingston, Georgia. He was born Oct. 18, 1830 in Onondaga, New York and died Dec. 31, 1911 in Lake City, Iowa. He was a member of the G.A.R., Lake City Post #156.
KUDER, Benjamin C. – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born about 1840 in Pennsylvania, and living in Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa when he enlisted Aug. 22, 1862. He mustered in on Sept. 3, 1862 and mustered out on June 5, 1865 in Washington, D. C.
PARKER, Haynes – served as a Private in Company G, 8th Iowa Infantry. He enlisted, at age 28, on Sept. 28, 1864 and mustered out July 21, 1865 at Montgomery, Alabama. He was born in Ohio. He was born June 1, 1836 in Ohio, died March 28, 1917 in Whitefish, Montana, and buried in Lake City Cemetery, Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa.
REYNOLDS, Benjamin F. – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born March 28, 1847 in Cass County, Michigan and a resident of Calhoun County, Iowa when he enlisted Feb. 20, 1864. He transferred to Company H, 7th Iowa Infantry on May 30, 1865 and mustered out July 12, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. He joined G.A.R, Lake City Post #64, died in 1924 and buried in Cottonwood Cemetery, Lake City, Iowa.
REYNOLDS, James – served in Company H, 10th Iowa Infantry. He was born in Ohio about 1833, while a resident of Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa when he enlisted Aug. 28, 1861 into Company K, 10th Iowa Infantry. He was transferred to Company H, 10th Iowa Infantry and died of erysipelas on Jan. 14, 1862 at Bird’s Point, Missouri.
SALISBURY, Leonard H. – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born Apr. 25, 1836 in Cassopolis, Michigan and living in Calhoun County, Iowa when he enlisted Feb. 13, 1864. He was transferred to Company H, 7th Iowa Infantry and mustered out July 12, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. He joined G.A.R. Grant City Post #21, died Feb. 8, 1919 in Marshalltown, Iowa, and buried in Cottonwood Cemetery, Lake City, Iowa.
SCOTT, Hiram – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born about 1842 and a resident of Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa when he enlisted at age 22 on March 20, 1864. He was taken prisoner on Oct. 5, 1864 in Allatoona, George, paroled, transferred to Company H, 7th Iowa Infantry, and mustered out on May 23, 1865 in Davenport, Iowa.
SHORT, George W. – served in Company H, 10th Iowa Infantry. He was born in Indiana about 1840, but a resident of Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa when he enlisted Aug. 23, 1861. He was promoted 3rd Corporal March 5, 1862, wounded in the right leg severely on May 16, 1863 at Champion Hills, Mississippi, and discharged Aug. 11, 1863 on account of his wounds.
SIFFORD, Henry H. – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was born about 1840 in Michigan and a resident of Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa when he enlisted Aug. 22, 1862. He was promoted 7th Corporal May 20, 1863, 5th Corporal Jan. 2, 1864, 4th Corporal, then 3rd Corporal on June 7, 1864. He was taken prisoner Oct. 5, 1864 at Allatoona, Georgia, escaped, and mustered out July 13, 1865 in Clinton, Iowa.
TILLOTTSON, Charles H. – served in Company E, 39th Iowa Infantry. He was age 31, born about 1833 in Michigan, and a resident of Lake City, Calhoun County, Iowa, when he enlisted Jan. 2, 1864. He was wounded severely Oct. 5, 1864 at Allatoona, Georgia, died of his wounds Jan. 6, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky, and buried in Cave Hill National Cemetery, in Louisville, Kentucky, section C, range 3, grave 78.

ADAMS, Isaac H. – served as a Private in Company I, 147th Indiana Infantry. He enlisted Feb 24, 1865 and mustered out Aug. 4, 1865. He was born Feb 3, 1949 in Marion, Indiana, died Nov. 27, 1919 in Lake City, Iowa and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
BROWNING, William Henry – served as a Private in Company E, 41st Wisconsin Infantry, enlisted May 5, 1864 and mustered out Sept. 23, 1864 at the expiration of his term. He was born July 7, 1840 in Bargon, Maine, died Sept. 27, 1934 in Rockwell City, Iowa and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
BURCH, Rollin – served as a Private in Company D, 8th Iowa Infantry. He enlisted Aug 14, 1861, was missing in action and taken prisoner April 6, 1862 at Shiloh, Tennessee, promoted to 5th Corporal, then 2nd Sergeant on April 1, 1866, and mustered out April 20, 1866 at Selma, Alabama. He was born April 10, 1836 in Westfield, New York, died March 20, 1915 in Rockwell City, Iowa, and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
CONDRON, William T. – served as a Private in Company K, 20th Iowa Infantry. He enlisted Aug. 11, 1862 as a Drummer, was reduced in ranks at his own request. He was born April 1, 1845 and died March 10, 1929, and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
DANFORTH, Lauriston F. – served in Company E, 4th Vermont Infantry, enlisted Sep 6, 1864, age 21, was in the Battle of Cedar Creek, mustered out June 19, 1865 at age 22. He was born March 19, 1843 in Vermont, died Dec. 9, 1923 and was a member of the G.A.R., Lake City Post #156.
DILLINGER, George Washington – served as a Private in Company A, 70th Ohio Infantry. He enlisted Oct. 18, 1861 and mustered out on Aug. 7, 1862 on a surgeon’s certificate of disability. He was born April 10, 1840 in Adams County, Ohio, died Dec. 2, 1910 at Fort Dodge, Iowa and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
DYER, Henry W. – served as a Hospital Steward in the 81st Illinois Infantry. He enlisted Aug 22, 1862 as a resident of Pomeroy, Iowa, enlisting as a Hospital Steward, mustered in Aug 26, 1862, was promoted to the Colored Regiment, and discharged Nov. 15, 1863. He was born Jan 24, 1830 and was a member of G.A.R. Rockwell City Post #322.
GOULD, James – served as a Private in Company F, 148th Ohio Infantry. He enlisted May 2, 1864 at age 28 for a 100 day service and mustered out with his company at Camp Marietta, Ohio. He was born Feb. 1, 1835 in Washington County, Ohio, joined G.A.R. Tracy Post (Marion County, Iowa), died April 15, 1889 in Clay Township, Marion County, and buried in Breckenridge Cemetery, Knoxville, Iowa.
GREGG, James H. – served as a Private in Company D, 6th Michigan Infantry. At age 23, he enlisted Aug. 6, 1861 for three years and discharged at the expiration of his term on Aug. 23, 1864 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was born May 23, 1836, died April 2, 1913 in Rockwell City, Iowa and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City.
GREGG, Tillman P. – served as a Captain in Company B, 3rd Iowa Infantry. He was born Oct. 29, 1827 in Ohio and lived in Red Rock, Marion County, Iowa when he enlisted May 21, 1861 at age 33. He was promoted to 8th Corporal July 25, 1861, to 2nd Lieutenant Feb. 14, 1862 and Captain on March 10, 1862. He resigned Aug. 3, 1862 for a disability. He joined the G.A.R. Lake City Post #43, and died March 3, 1901 in Lake City, Iowa with burial in Lake Creek Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
HOSKINS, James N. – served as a Private in Company I, 12th Illinois Infantry for three months and as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 57th Illinois Infantry. He enlisted April 24, 1861 as a Private in Company I, 12th Illinois Infantry and mustered out Aug. 1, 1861. He reenlisted Sept. 18, 1861 as a Sergeant in Company B, 57th Illinois Infantry and mustered out as a Sergeant on July 8, 1865. He was born June 30, 1842 and died Dec. 15, 1915.
HUTCHINSON, Henry H. – military record not found, born Aug. 24, 1835 in Cass County, Michigan, died May 13, 1913 in Lake City, Iowa
JACK, Alexander N. – served as a Private in Company H, 51st Illinois Infantry. He enlisted Dec. 4, 1861, was mustered in Dec. 28, 1861, and mustered out Feb. 28, 1865. He was born March 9, 1847 in Pennsylvania and died May 5, 1913.

MAXWELL, Benjamin Franklin – served as a Private in Company A, 43rd Indiana Infantry. He mustered in on Aug. 20, 1861 and mustered out March 16, 1865. He was born in 1841 in Ohio.
MCCRARY, George B. – served as a Corporal in Company B, 83rd Illinois Infantry. He was born April 21, 1837 in Jefferson County, Illinois, enlisted Aug. 2, 1862, and mustered out June 26, 1865 as a Corporal. He joined the G.A.R. Lake City, #43, and died Aug. 19, 1922 in Lake City, Iowa
MCVAY, Josiah D. – served as a Corporal in Company B, 36th Iowa Infantry. He was born Feb. 3, 1844 in Illinois, enlisted Aug. 6, 1862, taken prisoner of war Apr. 25, 1865 at Mark’s Mill, Arkansas. He was kept as a prisoner of war at Tyler, Texas from Apr. 25, 1864 to Feb. 26, 1865. He was promoted to 6th Corporal Aug. 3, 1865 and mustered out Aug. 24, 1865 at Devall’s Bluff, Arkansas. His occupation was Physician, he joined the G.A.R. Lake City Post #43, and died April 10, 1904 at Lake City, Iowa.
MOYER, Henry – served as a Private in Company H, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry. He enlisted June 5, 1861, was wounded Sept. 17, 1862, and mustered out July 1, 1864 at the expiration of his term. He reenlisted Sept. 15, 1864 as a Corporal in Company E, 43rd Wisconsin Infantry, promoted to Sergeant, and mustered out June 24, 1865. He was born Oct 25 1836 in Ohio, died Dec 25, 1924 in Pomeroy, Iowa, and buried in Union Cemetery, Pomeroy, Butler Township, Calhoun County, Iowa.
PATTERSON, John W. – served as a Private in Company G, 2nd Iowa Infantry. He enlisted Feb 10, 1864, age 15. He was transferred to Company G, 2nd Infantry Consolidated Battalion and Company G, Veterans Infantry. He was mustered out July 12, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born July 22, 1848 in Lee County, Iowa and died Sept. 18, 1931 in Lake City, Iowa.
RANKIN, Edward – served as a Private in Company F, 3rd United States Colored Artillery. He enlisted Sept. 21, 1864 and discharged August 1, 1865. He was born in 1834 in Tennessee, died April 14, 1923, and buried in Union Cemetery, Pomeroy, Calhoun County, Iowa.
REED, William – served as a Private in the 2nd Iowa Battalion. He enlisted at age 22 on February 18, 1864 and mustered out Aug. 7, 1865 in Davenport, Iowa. He was born in 1841 and died May 6, 1911 with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
ROSENBERGER, Elias – served as a Private in Company D, 1st Pennsylvania Independent Battalion Cavalry. He enrolled as a Private in Company D, Independent Battalion Cavalry Militia of 1863 at Allegheny, PA on June 25, 1863 at age 19. He mustered in at Pittsburgh, PA on July 17, 1863 and mustered out with his company in December 1863. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1843, died June 10, 1902, and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
SCOTT, Anderson Judkins – served as a Captain in Company C, 24th Iowa Infantry. He enlisted when he was 29 years old on Aug. 8, 1862 as 3rd Sergeant, promoted 2nd Sergeant on March 1, 1863, then 2nd Lieutenant on May 17, 1863 and 1st Lieutenant Nov. 3, 1863. He was promoted to Captain before he mustered out on July 17, 1865 in Savannah, Georgia. He was born July 30, 1834 in Steubenville, Ohio, died in 1916, Rockwell City, Iowa, and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City.
SEIDLER, Ferdinand – served as a Private in Company F, 14th United States Infantry and served for 9 months. He was born in 1840 in Prussia and died Sept. 20, 1917 and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa. His religion was Methodist and his occupation was Drayman.
SMITH, William T. – served as a Corporal in Company C, 8th Iowa Infantry. At age 27, he enlisted on Aug. 10, 1861, promoted 6th Corporal on March 1, 1863, and mustered out Sept. 28, 1864. He was born in 1835, Pennsylvania and died March 2, 1912 in Marshalltown, Iowa.
SQUIRES, Horace D. – served as a Sergeant in Company A, 14th Iowa Infantry [also listed as Horace D. Squyer] At age 33, he enlisted as a Wagoner on Aug 21, 1862, promoted 4th Sergeant on April 13, 1863, then 2nd Sergeant Dec. 1, 1863 and mustered out Nov. 16, 1864 at Davenport, Iowa. He was born Oct. 22, 1829 in New York, died Feb. 5, 1921 in Battle Creek, Iowa and buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek, Iowa.
STONEBRAKER, Austin F. – served as a Private in Company B, 2nd Iowa Infantry. At age 22, he enlisted on April 30, 1861 and mustered in May 27, 1861, promoted 4th Sergeant on Aug. 31, 1861 and discharged Sept. 9, 1862. He was born Aug. 1, 1839 in Pennsylvania, died in 1901, and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
WALTERS, William W. – served as a Private in Company H, 92nd Illinois Infantry. He enlisted Aug. 6, 1862 and mustered out June 21, 1865. He was born Jan. 31, 1840 in New York, died Aug. 24, 1895 in Rockwell City, Iowa and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City.
WILLIAMS, George W. – served as a Private in Company K, 3rd Iowa Cavalry. At age 26, he enlisted Sept. 3, 1861 as a 2nd Corporal, mustered in Sept. 14, 1861 and later discharged. He reenlisted Jan. 1, 1864 and mustered out Aug. 9, 1865 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born Aug. 24, 1835 in Ohio and died Nov. 8, 1914, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rockwell City, Iowa.
