Cemeteries from the USGenWeb Archives by Ken Kothe Ken was a prolific historian and genealogist with an interest in Butler County. Ken submitted many cemetery readings to the USGenWeb Archives and we are displaying his cemeteries on the Butler County IAGenWeb pages. The copyright belongs to Ken but we are thankful for the facts that they share. Sadly Ken passed away in 2012 and he will be greatly missed. You can read Ken's obituary here. |
Coster Cemetery
This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Ken Kothe <kkenk@frontiernet.net> January 1998 Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm THE COSTER CEMETERY The Coster Cemetery is located in the northeast corner of the south one-half of the southeast quarter of section 22 of Jefferson Township, Butler County, Iowa. The land was originally owned by John Coster and was about a half mile from the Salem Evangelical Association Church. While the earliest readable date on a gravestone is 1871, county records state that on or about January 31, 1874 the above named real estate was conveyed by John Coster and his wife to the trustees of Salem Evangelical Church. Some early county death records list place of burial as "German Church Cemetery" or "Salem Cemetery", and one reads "one-half mile south of the German church". There is also on file at the recorder's office a deed dated May 3,1913. George Pohl, C.L. Renning and H.F. Renning, trustees of the Salem Evangelical Church conveyed the property to the Coster Cemetery Association. Across from the cemetery stands the foundation fragments of an early building of the once town of Coster. A lot number follows each name listed in the following pages. Lots l through l8 are in the northermost row with the numbers running east to west. The 2nd row, just south of the above row, contains lots l9 through 35 with the numbers running east to west. The 3rd row contains lots 36 through 52 and the 4th row, lots 53 through 70. Adams, John K.
