CEMETERY: Old Town Cemetery, Butler Co., IA This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Ken Kothe <kkenk@frontiernet.net> September 1997 Copyright. When coming into Clarksville on Hwy. 188 from the south and approaching the first set of railroad tracks, turn immediately to your right and go four blocks east. The cemetery will come into plain view in front of you as you will be approaching it at the north- west corner which is the only entrance into the cemetery. Old Town Cemetery was started soon after the first settlers arrived in the area with the oldest dates on headstones being Henry Hilton, who died on Sept. 21, 1851, and Charles Lowe, who died on Dec. 2, 1851. In the early 1900's the city council outlawed more burials in Old Town unless it involved family, with the last burial being that of Edna Prey in 1944. There are more burials in <D Old Town than what the existing number of headstones would indicate. Almost every headstone was able to be read and documented. Sometime after Lynnwood Cemetery was plotted on the west side of Clarksville, several graves were removed from Old Town Cemetery and interned at Lynnwood. Since no plot book for the cemetery could be found at this time, it is firmly believed locally that it burned in the town fire of 1956. The last known pre-1900 burial was that of Alex Glenn who died May 10, 1894. Row 1 is the first row by the entrance. There are l4 rows numbered from West to Eat.
