Brought to Cresco for Burial.
Martin Jones was called to Texas last week by the serious illness of a brother, Pat Jones, who passed away before his arrival. Mr. Jones arrived Monday with the remains and on Tuesday morning the funeral was held at the Bluffton church, Father Sampson officiating.
The deceased was an unique character with a rare occupation, mention of which was made in the San Antonio (Texas) Express, as follows:
The death Wednesday of Pat Jones at his home, 501 Buena Vista Avenue, marked the passing of a San Antonian who enjoyed the acquaintance of perhaps more wealthy sportsmen of the North and East than any local resident.
For the name of Pat Jones was known in nearly every exclusive polo club of the East because he, for many years, made a business of training and selling polo ponies. It is said that among his sales was one of eleven ponies to George Gould at a figure exceeding $1,000 each and every year he made a regular shipment to clients in the East.
He was 77 years old and was born in Louisiana, living in San Antonio more {t}han 40 years. Several years ago he retired from active business.
Years ago he was a familiar figure on the streets driving usually in an English dogcart. At one time he was the owner of a famous trotting mule which was so speedy he took it to New York City and gave exhibitions.
Arrangements for the funeral have not been made awaiting the arrival of his brother, Martin Jones.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1841 and died Mar. 12, 1919. He is buried in Hesper Public Cemetery.
