His 84th Birthday.
Nov. 14th the Waukon friends of J. B. Mattoon assemb{l}ed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dayton, and assisted in celebrating then venerable doctor’s eighty-fourth birthday. A brief summary of his life given by the Standard, makes this story:—
Dr. J. B. Mattoon was born in Hampshire county, Mass., in 1814 and lived in that state till 1832.
He went to Paynesville, Ohio, entered and graduated from the Willoughby University of Lake Erie (now the Cleveland Medical College) and received his degree of M. D. in 1840, and for the most of the next fourteen years practiced medicine in Crawford County, Pa. In 1852 and 1853 he was in California. In 1854 he came east and located at Freeport, which then expected to be the county seat of Winneshiek county, and remained there till 1866 when he located in Waukon, his residence being for four years where T. H. Hale's is now, and afterward on the farm just east of town. He married Miss D. E. Heath in Crawford county, Pa., in 1842. She died in Waukon in 1883. In 1885 Dr. Mattoon began spending his winters in DeFuniak Springs, Fla., and since 1892 has made his home there till about a year ago. He is now the only physician living who was practicing in the four north-eastern counties of Iowa when he came to this state.
