Verdell Loren Lunning was born on June 11, 1938, in Clarion, Iowa, to Virgil and Anola (Helland) Lunning. He grew up in the Crystal Lake area where he attended school. After graduating in 1956, he served the in the United States Military. In 1960, he married Leola Frances Mason in Crystal Lake, Iowa. To this marriage, three sons were born, Steve, Scott, and Kevin. They made their home in Forest City where Verdell worked at the North Ag Fertilizer Plant. After a few years, they moved to Waldorf, Minnesota, where he became the Fertilizer manager. Shortly, however, they moved back to their roots, and Verdell started working first for Polar Chemical and then for the Farmer’s Coop in Forest City where he remained until he retired. Then, he worked part time during the summers for the County Conservation Board.

A workaholic by nature, nonetheless, Verdell enjoyed the outdoors in his free time. He, especially, loved to fish and deer and pheasant hunt. He, always, looked forward to the annual deer hunting weekend with his family and friends (a tradition, which his sons and grandsons still observe to this day). After he retired, he, also, liked his daily “2:00 P.M. coffee time” with his friends at Shooterz. In addition, Verdell enjoyed spending time with his wife, Lee, before her passing in 2006. Indeed, spending time with his family, always, put a smile on his face. Immensely proud of all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he, always, enjoyed seeing them.

Verdell is survived by his sons: Steve (Jackie), Scott, and Kevin (Lisa) Lunning and Teri Engstler; his grandchildren: Kelsey (Lance) Barhite; Nicole (Ben) Follman; Adam, Bryan (Hannah), Chad (Ashley), Holly, Matt, and Mitch Lunning; his great-grandchildren: Harrison Barhite; Cayden and Ethan Follman; Brayden, Brently, Emersyn, and Kaylee Lunning; his brother, Darrel (Wanda) Lunning; and his sisters, Denise (Doug) Rogers and Deb (Scott) Loge; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leola; his grandson, Justin Lunning; his parents, Virgil and Anola; and his brothers, Jerry, Lynn, and Roger.
