Norman Roger Nyhus
March 19, 1931 - October 1, 2019Norman Roger Nyhus, 88, of Forest City, died peacefully on Monday, October 1, 2019, at the Westview Care Center in Britt, Iowa.
Norman was born at home on March 19, 1931, to Otis and Tillie (Midtgaard) Nyhus. Baptized and confirmed (1946) at the Ellington Lutheran Congregational Church, he started his education in a country school and then transferred to Fertile, graduating from Fertile High School in 1951.
On December 5, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Army serving as a corporal in the artillery during the Korean War. Discharged on November 12, 1954, he spent part of his time in the military serving in Germany as well.
On August 14, 1955, Norman married Delores Morem at the Ellington Lutheran Congregational Church, which later changed its name to Pilot Knob Lutheran. Norman had farmed with his dad and his brother, Harold, since childhood. In 1998, however, they quit farming full-time and rented the land to Norman’s son, Roger. Nevertheless, Norman continued to help his son farm as long as his health would allow. In addition, he would help with doing custom work for the neighbors such as planting, combining, picking corn, shelling corn, trucking, and using a grain vac to clean out the bins.
Active in the WIT North Iowa Travelers Club as a past president, he served in various capacities at the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, Opportunity village, and the Forest City Co-op Oil Company Board which, later, merged with the Farmers Co-op Elevator Board.
Through the years, Norman and Delores owned two Winnebago motorhomes which he used to pursue his hobbies: hunting, fishing, traveling, and camping. In addition, Norman, Delores and Harold wintered in Texans for several years. They enjoyed spending time with friends and taking tours. Moreover, he enjoyed taking his son, Roger, and grandson, Craig, prairie dog hunting in South Dakota. For several years, they traveled to their destination with his brother, Harold, along with Dana and Matt Swanson.
After Norman suffered a stroke in October 2016, he could no longer stay on the farm. Thus, he and Harold moved into the Forest Plaza assisted living in Forest City. Then, in April 2019, he entered Hospice care, and because of his health needs, he was moved to Westview Care Center in Britt in May.
Norman is survived by his son, Roger (Bonnie) Nyhus, of Forest City; his grandson, Craig (Laura) Nyhus; his great-grandson, Carter, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his granddaughter, Laura Nyhus, of Gilbert, Arizona; his brother, Harold; his sister-in-law, Donna (Harvey) Eden; his nieces, Cindy (Keith) Mayland and Darla Carrasco; and his nephew, David (Julie) Eden, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Tillie Nyhus; an infant brother; his wife, Delores; and his son, Ronald.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, 2391 330th Street, Forest City, Iowa, with Rev. Robert Snitzer officiating. Visitation is scheduled for one hour before the services at the church on Wednesday. Interment will follow in the Pilot Knob Lutheran Cemetery, rural Forest City, with Military Honors conducted by the Forest City American Legion Post #121. Memorials may be directed to MercyOne Hospice North Iowa.
