"George W. Swegle -- George W. Swegle was born in Fulton County, Illinois, August 30, 1840 and died in the General Hospital in Centerville, Iowa, December 4, 1928, aged 88 years 3 months and 5 days. He removed to Iowa in 1866 and settled on a farm west of Corydon. Here he made his contribution to the development of the community. Here he reared his family, toiled diligently and lived sacrificially so that they might possess and enjoy advantages and comforts that were not within his reach when he founded this home. In 1865 he was united in marriage to Christina Emily Bartlett. There were four children born to them. Rosa Adelin was taken from them in early infancy. After a delightful fellowship of seventeen years he was called upon to mourn the passing of his devoted companion, and to care, as best he could, for his motherless children. This trying bereavement made him all the more solicitous for the welfare of his loved ones. He was married to Mrs. Charlotte McCreary in 1893. Three children blessed this union, one of whom died in infancy. On April 14, 1924, this devoted and faithful companion was taken from him. This was a very heavy blow and from which he could not fully recover. The deceased was one of the successful stockmen of Wayne county. He was a diligent, aggressive, and successful citizen. In his business dealings he was honorable and was held in high esteem by all with whom he had dealings. His interest in life never abated. He, not withstanding the heavy burden of years, retained a vital touch with the affairs of each passing day. The closing five years of his life he spent with the son, Ben. They were pals through the years. The attachment of father and son ripened until the thought of separation was heartrending. In this, as in all similar relationships, the sad, sad, goodbye had to be spoken. But the hope of reunion brings comfort and assurance to every sorrowing heart, who knows Him who 'brought life and immorality to light through the Gospel.' Mr. Swegle was preceded in death by his son, John B., November 10, 1920. He is survived by Mrs. George Bull of Trenton, Mo.; Mrs. A.L. McClain of Seymour, Iowa; Ben Swegle also of Seymour, Iowa; and Jay Swegle of New Virginia, Iowa. In addition to these immediate members of the family, there are four grandchildren and one great grandchild, and a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. McClain, Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. D.J. McKay, pastor of the local Methodist church officiating. E.L. Hays brought consolation and enrichment to the sorrowing with two vocal numbers. A generous floral tribute bespoke the sympathy and appreciation for many friends.
