Mary Woodyard, 95, died Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Regency Care Center. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, November 19, 2011, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mary was born in Orient, Iowa on April 23, 1916 to Abraham Lincoln Pettit and Bessie (Hartley) Pettit. For a while she lived on a farm. Mary grew up with three brothers and seven sisters. They attended Orient Consolidated School. They had various jobs relating to housework, restaurant work, and taking care of ill people. A special dog in Mary’s family was called Spike.
Mary has always been willing to assist others and did so without being called upon. She was exceptionally caring and compassionate and went the extra mile. Since no relative could be there, Mary recently spent hours at the side of her roommate until the time of her friends passing.
She loved quilting, crocheting, having picnics, reading, traveling and visiting with her neighbors. Her greatest love was her family and spending time with them.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Janette (Rex) Brown Leanhart; son, Oran Dean Glade Sr.; many grand, great, great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard L. Woodyard; four children, John, Marlene, Clifford (Butch) and Robert (Bob); her seven sisters and three brothers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family. www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com
