Based on the 1860 Federal census it doesn't look as though the Elkins' moved to Iowa until the mid to late 1850s and that William had died prior to 1860. The 1860 Federal census for Green Township, Wapello county shows:
Elkins, Mary, aged 43, born Kentucky
Elkins, Elonzo, aged 24, born Kentucky
Elkins, Melissa, aged 17, born Kentucky
Elkins, William, aged 15, born kentucky
Elkins, Nancy, aged 14, born Kentucky
Elkins, Almeda J., aged 12, born Indiana
Elkins, Thomas B., aged 6, born IndianaWapello County marriage records show:

Almeda Jane Elkins married John E. Taylor on 4 Oct 1865
