Charles Simmons Civil War records or obit~~

I am looking for information on Charles Simmons. According to pension record on footnote.com he died Jan. 21, 1926 in Iowa City. He is on find-a-grave and buried in Ottumwa Cem.but does not have a picture of a headstone or note of military service. I find him in Ottumwa on the 1915 census but it does not have any military listed.
I am trying to prove if he is the Charles Simmons that enlisted in the 6th KS Cav in 1861 from Ottumwa. Don't know if there was an obit in the Ottumwa paper or not.
My son and I are reserching the 6th KS and trying to add genealogy material along with military for each man if possible.
