STEPHEN V. HOYT VOTED FOR LINCOLN
Stephen V. Hoyt has been living over the days of long ago the past week. He likes to recall that in 1860 he cast his vote for Abraham Lincoln, the martyred president, whose birthday the nation celebrated last Wednesday.
Stephen Hoyt came to Ottumwa May 12, 1858, with Con Lewis. They were carpenters and many of the first frame houses were built by them. Mr. Hoyt was born in Auburn, N.Y., January 12, 1832. He was married here to Miss Sara J. Green, December 31, 1861. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt, and five are still living. They are: A. L. Hoyt of Muscatine, Mrs. G. W. Lynch of Agency, Mrs. J. Parks and Mrs. N. F. Reed of this city and Mrs. Orpha J. Moss of Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt are spending the winter at the N. F. Reed home. Mr. Hoyt is in very good health and active, although past his eighty-first year.
