Clyde R. Swinehart, 85, of Creston died Jan. 11, 2008 at Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, with the family present 9:30 a.m. To service time Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Don Frank of Winterset will officiate. Burial will be in Ellston Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Avenue of Flags in Ellston.
Clyde R. Swinehart, son of Hazel Mary (Stoner) and George Jacob Swinehart, was born October 8, 1922, in Denver, Colo. He attended Shannon City schools, then entered the U.S. Navy in November 1940, serving until December 1946, then serving until 1954 in the Reserves. Clyde earned his high school diploma while enlisted and later earned a degree at the Pasadena City College in Pasadena, Calif. On July 12, 1943,he married Jeannette Smith in Jacksonville, Fla. and they later divorced. Clyde married Barbara Jeanne McConnell in Grant City, Mo. They settled in Illinois for three years before moving to California .In 1964, they moved back to Creston where they lived for three years. They returned to California for 20 years. In 1987, they returned to Creston to retire.
Clyde worked in a canning factory, as a mechanic, caterpillar tractor and farm implement dealer, filling station entrepreneur, flight line mechanic, and feed yard hand, for the aerospace industry as a buyer, production control supervisor, inspector and vendor liaison, real estate entrepreneur, antique sales and restoration and various other sidelines to stay busy, including square dance caller and instructor and patio furniture manufacturer.
Survivors include his daughters, Holli Sue (husband Steve) Hesslink of Creston and Glenda (husband Joe) Davis of Jacksonville, Fla.; step-daughters, Carmen Matylewicz of Madisonville, Tenn., and Rhonda Rae Clymer of Gonzales, Calif.; Verla (husband Don) Fitzgerald of Nevada and Velma (husband Don) Frank of Winterset, brother Raymond (wife Christina) Swinehart of Portland, Ore.; sister-in-law, Joan Kelley of Show Low, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara on Dec. 3, 2006, and step-grandson Paul Amundson.
