Larry Loury, 82, of Creston, died Friday, December 31, 2021 at the EveryStep Hospice House in Creston.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 6, 2022 at the Powers Funeral Home 601 New York Avenue in Creston. Pastor Mary O’Riley will officiate.
The Service will be Live Streamed on a link under events at www.powersfh.com.
Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery of Creston, with graveside military honors by the Theodore J. Martens Post 1797 Creston V.F.W.
Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Memorials are to be established in his name.
Larry Lee Loury, son of Henry Leo Loury and Delilah Irene (Bonnes) Loury, was born June 18, 1939 in rural Afton, Iowa. Larry graduated from the Arispe High School.
On April 12, 1959, Larry married Nellie Lou Coverdell in Diagonal, Iowa. They left on their wedding night to Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Larry was then transferred to Naha Okinawa, Japan from September of 1960 and next transferred in March 1962 to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, until his honorable discharge in October 1962. Following his military service, Larry worked at a grain elevator in Clearfield, Iowa. He then ran a backhoe for Union County Roads Department. Larry hired on with United Parcel Service (UPS) in 1965 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He transferred to Creston UPS in 1967 and continued delivering in the Winterset area until his retirement in 1997.
Larry had been a member of the Creston Elks and the American Legion.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife of over 62 years Nellie Loury of Creston; two daughters Tammy (Dave) Rhine and Penny Oetken, both of Creston; five grandchildren Cindy (Mike) Briner of Creston, Cory (Jenny) Hoakison of Corning, Amanda (Sean) Montanye of Creston, and Morgan Oetken and Bailey Oetken, both of Creston; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers Kenneth Clark of Creston and Dennis (Twyla) Loury of Afton; brother-in-law, Bob (Ann) Carns of Oregon City, Ore.; former son-in-law, Bill Oetken and close friend Gayle Sisler of Creston and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, father & mother-in-law, brother Dale (Clara) Clark, sister Erma Carns, two sisters-in-law Earla Clark and Lucille (Forest) Overholser, two brothers-in-law Harold (Norma) Coverdell and Dannie Coverdell, several nieces and nephews, close friend Thelma Sisler, and former son-in-law Mark Hoakison.
