Terry R. Wheeler, 78, of Urbandale, formerly of Tama, passed away Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Mercy Hospice Johnston from complications of Multiple Myeloma. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday October 24, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Terry was born on June 25, 1934 in Kellerton, Iowa, the son of Troy A. and Naomi (Fuller) Wheeler. He graduated from Tama High School in 1953 and Iowa Barber College in 1954. After graduation from Barber College, Terry joined his father Troy at the Wheeler Barbershop in Tama.
Terry proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1957-1959.
He was united in marriage to Audrey Belton Long on March 15, 1965 in Sterling, Ill.
Terry began working at T.C. & E. of Iowa in Tama in 1973 and retired as the president of T.C. & E. of Iowa in 1993. He had served on the Tama City Council from 1970-1972. Terry was one of the original members of the Tama-Toledo Jaycees. He was an avid supporter of South Tama Athletics and attended many games over several decades and loved and supported the Tama community.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and two brothers, Larry R. and Gary L. Wheeler.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey of Urbandale; a daughter, Deborah Wheeler of West Des Moines; two sons, David (Ann) Long of Urbandale and Steven Long of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters, Rachel and Natalie Long of Urbandale; sister, Donna (Bill) Garrett of Crossville, Tenn.; nieces, Terri Lynn Papesh, Joni Parks, and Tracy Dean; and a nephew Troy Wheeler.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Terry’s name to the South Tama County Activity Boosters or Tama VFW Post #6607.
