CLUTIER MAN NEARLY
BURNED TO DEATH

J. J. Kopecky of Clutier, Tama County knows what it is to lie helpless and watch death creeping up by inches. He had a narrowing experience the other day and owes his life to a thoughtful motorist. About 12 miles west of Cedar Rapids, Kopecky’s car was sideswiped by another car which did not stop. The Kopecky car rolled in the ditch and burst into flames. Kopecky was dazed by the impact but realized the danger of his position. He was pinned securely under the steering well and could not move. Car after car passed his burning car, but he could not call out and no one stopped to investigate the burning car beside the road. The flames had reached a flame of intense heat and Kopecky had about given up hope of rescue when Tony Schmitz of Van Horn, Benton County, thought the sight of the car in the ditch a blaze was a rather unusual one and stopped. Schmitz opened the door of the drivers side and found Kopecky. The latter had not practically recovered from the effects experience but the car was completely destroyed. – Dyersville Commercial
