Unknown Death Date/Location

Hello, I have a unique problem. I know the name, birth place (abt 1854, IL), spouse, and parents of my gr gr gr grandfather Robert Yocum, but have no idea where or when he died, but I suspect it was either Story of Polk County, Iowa (which is where his son Bert Yocum was born). His second wife remarried in 1897, and I don't know if it was because Robert died or they divorced. I suspect he died, as there is no trace of him after the 1885 Iowa state census. The problem, though, is that to order a death certificate, the state requires an exact death date and location, which I don't have. They don't even have an index to search through!(there's bureaucracy for you)I also have no idea where he is buried. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me, either post here or send me an email. Thanks.
