Warren Township Farmer Suicides By Hanging

Special to the Journal.
Roland, May 2--Funeral services are being arranged here today for Oscar M. Wierson, 52, well-known farmer east of here who suicided by hanging himself by a halter rope from the rafters of the haymow in his barn Thursday morning.

He had attended to his early morning chores, had his breakfast with the family and then left the house for the barn, ostensibly to go to the field for work.

Not noticing him leave for the field, Mrs. Wierson went out to the barn and entering, noticed his body dangling from rope attached to a rafter in the mow.

Mrs. Wierson ran to the house and called her neighbors, Wm. Tjelmeland and Silas Strum, who came at once to her assistance. They called Dr. J. A. Snyder, and when he arrived they lowered the body from the haymow and Dr. Snyder examined the body, announcing that he evidently had died about two hours earlier. Coroner Guy Mills was called and after examining the body pronounced the case suicide and announced an inquest was not necessary.

He had written a note, which was found on the floor beneath the body, addressed to his wife and children telling them he had to commit the deed, and giving Mrs. Wierson instructions about different matters in connection with the farm.

It is assumed that continued ill health caused him to become despondent. He had been in ill health for several years and a year ago this spring held a closing out sale of his farm equipment, leasing the homestead to his nephew, Ward Wierson, and moved to the 40 acre tract a half mile north of the homestead. The homestead is located three miles east and a half mile north of Roland in Warren township.

Funeral rites for this World War veteran, native son of Warren township, who died upon the old Wierson homestead, will be held Saturday afternoon, with prayer at the Erickson Funeral home at Roland at 1:30 and the funeral at Bergen Lutheran church at 2:00, with his pastor, Rev. Sumstad in charge.

He leaves his wife, two children, Lavon and Willard, at home, his aged mother, Mrs. W. T. Wierson in Roland, his sister, Mrs. J. B. Rognelien and brothers, Martin, Andrew and John, all of Ames, and Leonard Wierson of Lanark, Ill.
