Pioneer Roland Woman Dies Suddenly
Special to the Journal:
Roland, April 8--Mrs. Elizabeth Amenson, 81, a long time resident of this community, passed away suddenly Monday morning at her home here. Although she had not been well for some time she had been up about six o'clock and called her daughters, Mrs. T. C. Jacobson and Mrs. M. O. Rod, saying she didn't feel well and for them to come to her home. She passed away at nine o'clock.Mrs. Amenson, daughter of the late Saul and Anna Erickson, was born on Jan. 7, 1860, in Morris, Ill., and when a young girl came with her parents to Iowa.
Since coming to Iowa she has always lived in this community. She was married to Ingvold Birkeland and they lived on a farm northeast of town. He passed away and later she married Henry Amenson and they lived on a farm three miles north of town. Several years ago they purchased a home and moved to Roland. Mr. Amenson passed away about two years ago.
She leaves six children by the first marriage and three by the second. They are Mrs. M. O. Rod, Mrs. T. C. Jacobson, Mrs. C. J. Jacobson, Mrs. M. J. Rod and S. O. Birkeland, all of this place, and Mrs. Cara Hoff of Makoti, N. D.; and Elmer and Irwin Amenson of Roland; Milford Amenson of Clarion; two sisters, Mrs. L. M. Olson of this place and Mrs. O. C. Hougland of Marshalltown, Ole J. Erickson of Roland and Ira Erickson of Kensett.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon with prayer services at the home at 1:30 o'clock with services at Bergen's church at 2 o'clock with the Rev. M. O. Sumstad in charge. Burial will be in the Roland cemetery.
