Maxwell Book: 1883-1983

Arthur E. Holtby, known as Fred, was born in Seamer, Yorkshire, England in 1865. He grew up on the family farm and received his education in the village school and later at a boarding school.

On attaining his majority he decided to come to America and landed in New York and located in Morgan County, Illinois. He worked there for six years, saving money to buy his own land.

On February 16, 1892 he married Ada M. Thursby of Franklin, Illinois. She was a daughter of Charles and Anna Thursby. In March they came to Iowa and settled near Collins. In 1909 they moved to a farm south of Maxwell where their three children, Orlando, Hazel and Ana grew up.

Mr. Holtby served as Justice of the Peace for Indian Creek Township several years. Mr. Holtby died in December 1928. Mrs. Holtby in December 1958.

Their son Orlando married Emma Majors and lived in the Maxwell farming area. They had a daughter Mary Helen. She is now Mrs. Mary Helen Plyman and has a son David.

Hazel never married and lived at home until her mother's death. Hazel died in 1970.

Ana taught school in this area and married Merl Andrews of Melbourne. They had a son Thomas and three grandchildren. Ana continues to live in Melbourne.
