This story was taken from page 397 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Gottlief and Wilminia came from Germany to the Ireton area in 1871 and resided on the same place until each passed away. The residence was ½ mile south and ½ mile west of Ireton.
Grandpa Hodam lived to be 81 years old, while his wife passed away at 62 years. She grew many beautiful flowers and gave freely of them, when ever needed.
They had 5 children, 3 of whom remained on the home place for 40 years. The children were:
Fred Hodam
Herman Hodam, who was blind and was known for his brooms and faithful church attendance. (died June 24, 1927)
Albert Hodam (Herman and Albert later filed on homesteads in S.D. (died Dec. 17, 1940)
Amelia Hodam married John Dietrick and resided in LeMars, IA.
3 children survived.
Emma Hodam (Condon) moved to S.D. in 1910 and remained there until her death in 1925. She and her husband filed on a homestead at Timber Lake, S.D. They had 5 children. (See Condon).

He was born 29 Aug 1820 baptized 3 Sep 1820 Memleben, Saxony Germany, parents Johann George Hodam and Louise Hodam. He married Wilhelmina ( Hanna Louise Wilhelmina Bachmann) 4 Oct 1846 Evangelische Saxony, Germany . Immigrated 28 Jun 1861 departed Germany from port of Bremen, arrived at New York 28 Jun 1861 on the ship Fanny Kirchmer. His occupation was farmer.
Wilhelmina Bachamann Hodam was born 29 Oct 1823 Prussia Germany Her parents were not found. She died 1 Sep 1891 Ireton IA.

6 Emma Hodam 1863 Illinois She married John Condon on 27 Mar 1895 Sioux County IA. She died 22 Sep 1925 Timber Lake SO. Find A Grave lists children as – Gertrude Ellen Johnston 1901-2001, Bessie Emma Grohsman, Clara May Blasingame 1896, Minnie A. Long 1900 and Karl John Condon 1897.
OBITUARY OF GOTTLIEF HODAM

Gottlieb Hodam, one of Sioux County's pioneer settlers, departed from his life at his home south of town on Tuesday morning. The funeral ceremonies were held in the M. E. Church Thursday morning, Rev. Du Boes officiating.

Gottlieb Hodam died Tuesday morning at the advanced ago of 82 years. He had been ailing for the past three months and gradually grew worse
until death relieved him. The funeral was held this forenoon from the M. E. church, Rev. F. E. DuBois preaching the sermon.
Mr. Hodam was one of the pioneer's of this community, having resided at his present residence, the place he homesteaded, for the last thirty years.
Mr. Hodam was born in Germany Aug. 29, 1818. He removed to Belvidere, IL., In 1862 and eight years later removed to this place. Five children
remain to mourn his departure. They are Fred Hodam and Mrs. John Dietrich, of LeMars, and Mrs. John Condon, Herman and Albert, of this place, all of whom attended the funeral. Mr. Hodam was an energetic man in his day, possessed of many good qualities.

Mrs. Hodam of Ireton, one of the pioneers of the town, and a highly esteemed woman, died at her home, Tuesday afternoon.

In the 1885 census they were living in Reading Tsp: Gottlob 65 born Germany , Minnie 63, Emma 22 b. IL)
(From the researcher this submitter did it is believed that Wilhelmina’s maiden name was Bachmann rather than Condon, dau Emma married a Condon.)
