This story was taken from page 536 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

In approximately 1790, a man (bricklayer by trade) named George Ernest Van Peursem (1770-1850 est), settled in Ede, Gelderland, Netherlands. He or his ancestors had come from France, in search of religious freedom. Possibly they were descendants of the Huguenots who had been greatly persecuted. In 1807, he married Geeritje Pluim (1784-1877). They had nine children: Leendert (?), Geurt (1809-1809); William (1809-1809); Pieter (1809-1877), Wauter (1817-1877); Johanna (1819-?), Jan (1821-?), George (1823-?), and Hendrike (1828-?). It appears that Geurt, William and Pieter were triplets and only Pieter lived beyond infancy. Records are inconsistent on some of the above.

George Ernest’s son, Peter (Pieter) Van Peursem (1809-1877), came to the Pella, Iowa area with his wife and seven children in 1856. His wife, Janneke Bos, died of cholera in about 1859, while living in Pella. Peter moved to his daughter’s home in Sioux County in 1874. His grave (1877), is one of the first in the Orange City cemetery. His children were: George (1842-1929); Janatje (Mrs. Gerrit De Jong), 1844-1828); Gerritje (Mrs. Herman Hasselman), (1846-1932); Willem (1848-1939); Wm. Maas (1850-1938), Orange City Cemetery); Aart (1852-1937); and Neeltje (Mrs. Bart Van Roekel) (1854-1933).

Peter’s brother, Wauter Van Peursem, came to the United States in 1869, and lived in the Pella area. His descendants settled in Minnesota.

George Ernst Van Peursem (Patriarch of the Iowa Van Peursem settler clan) was born November 1779 in Leiden, Netherlands. He was baptized 11 Nov 1779 in Leiden at the Geloof: Ned. Duitsch Gereformeerd. He died 26 Mei 1834 in Ede, Gelderland at 54 years of age. He was the son of Geurt Van Peursem en Geertrui Heijser/Slijser. Goerge married Gerritje Peterse Pluim. Gerritje Peterse Pluim was born 19 Dec 1784 Bennekom Neth, baptized 25 Dec 1784 Bennekom, died 14 Nov 1855 Ede, Gelderlan, Netherlands. She was the daughter of Peter Woutersz Pluim and Maatjen Maassen.

8. Wouter van Peursem 1817 Ede married Neeltje Bouwhorst & Bartje van Steenbergen.
9. Johanna Harmina van Peursem 1819 Ede, married John Hansman
10. Jan van Peursem 1821 Ede, married Petronella Koudis
11. Georg van Peursem 1823 Ede, married Evertje van Omme
12. Gerritje van Peursem 1825-1836 died at nine years old.

Geurt van Peursem was born 10 Jul 1750 Renkum, Gelderland Netherlands and died 1 Jan 1793 Ede, Gelderland Netherlands. He was the son of Jan van Peursem 1725-1808 and Maritje Guertsen Van Maanen died 1792. George Ernst Van Peursem 1780-1834 was one of their six children.
Wife Geertruid Slijser born 1752 Neth. was the daughter of George Ernst Slijser born Leiderdorp, Zuid Holland Neth. died before 1772 Leiden Neth. and Elisabeth Lamens 1717-1795. Geertruid was one of their six children.

Geurt V. P.’s parents:
Jan Van Peursem born 1725 Ede, Gelderland, Neth. died 29 Dec 1808 Gelderland Neth. He was the son of Jan Van Peursem 1695 and Maaijke Snoek 1696 His wife was Marijtje Guertsen Van Maanen died 1792. Reportedly, this Jan Van Peursem was the son of Jan van Peursem born about 1695 at Werkendam, Noord Brabant, Netherlands. This latter Jan V. P. was married to Maaijke Snoek born 22 Apr 1696 Sleeuwijk, Noord Brabant Neth., the daughter of Hendrik Macheilsz Gielen Snoek born 1 Jan 1671 at Sleeuwijk N. B.
