This story was taken from page 396 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

Edith Amanda, daughter of Leydiann (Cunningham) and Elias Gandy, married John Michael Grau, Mar. 15, 1888 in Tama Co., Ia. There they farmed until 1904 when they moved to Ireton, Ia. and bought land seven miles north of town.

Edith and Mike Grau moved to Ireton in 1915 into the home which is now 302 5th St. During those days they milked cows, sold milk and cream, and Mrs. Grau made and sold butter.

Mr. and Mrs. Mike Grau were members of the Presbyterian Church.

Their children were:
Ora Cunningham married Jennie Frew Brown June 1, 1910.
Roger Merle married Stella Mae Brown Mar. 5, 1913.
Paul Braunt married Emma Ella Yunker Dec. 10, 1914.
Asa Chalmers married Erma Ann Stuckenbruck Feb. 3, 1915. Erma passed away in Aug. 1935. Asa then married Ida Rose Ahlrich on Sept. 10, 1936.
Cecil Deane married Althea Elaine Wertz on June 17, 1922.
Helen married Delbert Leroy Mitchell Sept. 24, 1919.
Lois Eda passed away on her first birthday with whooping cough.

John Michael Grau passed away of a sudden heart attack on Feb. 9, 1935 at his home at the age of 69 years. Edith Amanda Gandy Grau passed away after a brief illness on Apr. 4, 1953 at the Le Mars hospital at the age of 85 years.

Edith Amanda Gandy born 28 Apr 1887 Pampa, De Kalb IL died 4 Ar 1953 Ireton Sioux IA. Her parents were Elias Gandy 1834-1919 and Lydia Ann Cunningham 1836-1913. John and Edith had children as follows:

2 Paul Braunt Grau born 22 Sep 1892 Montour Tama IA died 25 Oct 1919 Ireton, Sioux IA. He married Emma Ella Yonder 1890-1980. Their children were Lawrence Oscar Grau 1915-1986, Mildred Lucille Grau 1916-1999, Kenneth Raymond Grau 1918-1995.
3 Asa Chalmers Grau born 29 Jan 1894 Montour Tama IA died 20 Nov 1981 Hialeah, Miami Dade FL. He married Erma Ann Stuckenbruck 1895-1935. Their children were Bernice Irene Grau 1915-1998 and Wilson Wayne Grau 1918-1996. Asa later married Ida Rose Aldrichs 1900-1997.
4 Cecil Deane Grau born 18 May 1897 Montour, Tama, IA died 22 Feb 1970 Sioux City IA. He married Althea Elaine Wertz 1900-1977. Three children were listed but not named.
5 Roger Merle Grau born 23 Nov 1899 Ireton, IA died 19 Oct 1960 Ireton, Sioux, IA. He married Stella Mae Brown 1893-1985. Their children were Evelyn Pearl Grau 1913-1988, Irene Maxine Grau 1916-2007, Infant Grau 1919-1919, Dwayne Marie Grau 1923-2007.

J. M. Grau Died Suddenly Saturday
The whole community received a severe shock Saturday when the word spread that J. M. Grau was called suddenly in death. That morning as had been his custom, he went down town for his mail, went to the barber shop and from there into the drug store. At the latter place, talking with friends, he told of a pain in his chest which he ascribed to carrying wood at his home.
A further stop or two was made and he went home, three blocks again. When he reached his home he suddenly collapsed and was gone before medical aid could reach him. Mr. Grau had not been in the best of health for years and a few years ago went to Rochester, Minn., where he obtained relief and soon began regaining his strength and since that time has taken a more active interest and part. In his many years on the farm where he worked hard, success crowned his efforts and he was the possessor of many acres of Sioux county soil with well equipped buildings. He was always interested in the affairs of his country, national, state and local, expressing himself freely on all matters.
He will be missed from the community and the wife, who for nearly 47 years has traveled life's road with him, as well as the children, have the sympathy of all in their loss of husband and father.
The funeral was held from the home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Harper in charge. Burial was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.
Large numbers of neighbors and friends joined' the relatives in paying their last respects to the memory of the departed.
John Michael Grau, son of Leonard and Mary Grau, was born April 7, 1866, near Montour, Tama county, Iowa, and died at his home in Ireton Feb. 9, 1935, aged 69 years, 10 months and 2 days. He obtained his schooling in the old home community. Here he was married March 16, 1888, to Miss Edith Gandy. They immediately began farming and continued to live near Montour until tbe spring of 1904, when they moved to Sioux county where they have since resided. They located on a farm seven miles north of Ireton where they lived until the fall of 1916, when they moved to Ireton which has until now been their home..
To Mr. and Mrs. Grau were born seven children, A son and daughter preceded him. in death. Those surviving are four sons, Ora, Roger and Asa of Ireton and Deane of Sioux City, and one daughter, Mrs. Helen Mitchell of Ireton. There are also nine grandsons, six granddaughters and one great granddaughter. There are four brothers, George of Ireton, Leonard and Lawrence of Long Beach, Calif., and Karl of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There are four sisters, Mrs. Anna Clay of Bancroft, S. D., Mrs. Lizzie Allgier of lake Andes, S. D., Mrs. Bettie Winders of Toledo, and Mrs. Christie Clement of Ames. There are many nephews and nieces.
The deceased was well and favorably known both in this community and beyond it. While not a member of church, he had the greatest respect for the Christian religion. He was a regular supporter of the church. He •had 'a. warm 'heart and consequently many friends. In all matters that arose he continually sought what seemed to him a right solution. His sudden passing is great shock to all, especially to those who were nearest and dearest to him. But as we would rather suffer ourselves than see those whom we love suffer, there is great reason for gratitude that in the manner of his going he was spared the pains that so many cannot avoid. May the God of all grace sustain and comfort those who remain.

Rites Held For Mrs. Edith Grau
Ireton, la.—Funeral services for Mrs. Edith Grau, who died Saturday, April 4, were held in the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon of last week with Rev. J. Boyd Stevenson officiating. A quartette composed of Bert Rogers, Fred Schuette, Mrs. Julius Barents and Mrs. Melvin Borgman, with Mrs. Henry Poll at the piano, furnished the music.
Pall bearers were Lawrence Grau, Kenneth Grau, Dwayne Grau, Elwood .Grau, Walter Mitchell, and Kenneth Mitchell. Bernard Grau was honorary pall bearer.
Edith Amanda Gandy Grau was born at Montour, Indian Village township April 28, 1867. She was united in marriage to John Michael Grau March 15, 1888 and moved to Highland township, Tama county, where she resided until 1904 and then moved to Sioux county, Iowa.
She was the mother of seven children. Her husband passed away February 9, 1935. Mrs. Grau answered the summons of her Master April 4 at 10 p. m. She leaves to mourn her passing four sons, Ora and Roger of Ireton, Asa of Hialeah, Fla., Deane of Sioux City; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Mitchell of Ireton; one brother, Arthur, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Lottie Henry of Cleveland, Ohio. One daughter died in infancy and one son passed away in his late twenties.
She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren and thirty-three great-grandchildren.
