Blatt, Hubert 1828-1911 & Barbara Young Family

This story was taken from page 64 of the St. Joseph Catholic Church Book 1886-1986. It was transcribed by Sarah Theis for the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Hubert Blatt was born on August 28, 1828 at Palyem, Germany and died on March 29, 1911 at Granville, Iowa. He married Barbara Young at Palyem in 1857. She was born in 1836 at Palyem, Germany and died in 1916 at Granville, Iowa. They had six children:
Magolena-was born May 13, 1858 at Palyem, Germany and died November 29, 1925 at Chicago, Illinois.
Michel-left home when he was twenty years old. It is thought he died before 1900.
Ann-was born April 7, 1874 at Palyem, Germany and died April 2, 1911 at Granville.
John-was born in 1859 at Palyem, Germany and died in 1929 at Granville.
Nicholas Jacob-was born December 28, 1869 at Palyem and died May 21, 1955 at LeMars, Iowa.
Maria-was born on June 24, 1867 at Palyem and died February 18, 1968 at Rosewell, South Dakota. She married Peter Schoul on April 18, 1893 at Granville, Iowa. They lived near Rosewell, South Dakota.

Note: The spelling of Hubert Blatt’s wife’s surname varies and it is recorded different ways in different sources. Variations include Junck/Junk,Young.

Hubert Blatt born 21 August 1828 in Palzem, Germany and died 29 March 1911 in Granville, IA. His parents were Hubert Blatt born 14 May 1797 in Germany died 4 July 1839 in Paris, France and Maria Spanier born 23 January 1799 died 20 April 1874 in Germany. He married Barbara Junk/Junck/Young (spellings vary) 9 January 1857 in Germany. The family immigrated to the US in 1882 and lived in Illinois until 1887 or 1888 when they then moved to Granville, IA area.

Barbara Young born 17 March 1835 in Germany died 3 September 1916 in Granville, IA. Her parents were Johann Heinrich Young 23 January 1793 in Leinenweber, Germany died 11 December Palzem, Germany and Magdelena Settinger born 19 June 1801 in Delmar, Germany died 7 June 1868 in Palzen, Germany. From family history reports on ancestry.com they had nine children, two dying in infancy. All of their children were born in Germany.

1. Magadelena Blatt born 13 May 1858 in Sinz, Germany died 29 November 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. She married Theodore Leipzig 1 May 184 in Chicago, Illinois. Theodore born 11 June 1858 in Wincheringen, Germany died 15 June 1932 in Chicago, Illinois. Magadelena and Theodore had seven children. Barbara born 1885 died 1963, never married and worked as a billing clerk according to the 1940 census. Theodore born 1887 died 1966 (Indiana) worked as a printer at a printing press. Theodore married Mary Peters 1914 and they had three children. Catherine born 1887 died 1957, never married and was living with her brother in the 1940 census in Chicago, Illinois. Peter Mathias born 1890 died 1971 (Illinois) and does not have appeared to married. Mary Theresa born 1892 died 1978 (Florida) married William Peter Naumes in 1912 and they had seven children. Nicholas Hubert born 1894 died 1950 married Sophia Gartner and they had two children. Frank born 1899 died 1981 (Illinois) married Elizabeth Schuler in 1934 and they had one daughter. Marguerite born 1904 died 1968 married Frank Thull.

2. John Peter born 11 October 1859 in Germany died 1 June 1929 in Granville, IA. The 1920 census lists him as single and his occupation as a farmer.

3. Michael Blatt born 9 December 1861 in Germany death unknown.

4. Margaretha born 29 September 1865 in Germany died unknown

5. Maria born 24 June 1867 in Germany, died 18 February 1968 in Howard, SD. She married Peter Nicholas Schaul on 19 April 1893 in Sioux County, IA. They had four children. Anna Marie born 1894 died 1972, married John Walter Hammond and they had one son. John Nicholas born 1895 died 1960 in CA, married Mae Frances Burkhart and they had four daughters. Sophia Veronica born 1897 died 1985 in Madison, SD married Otto Miller. Raymond born 1904 died 1931 in Madison, SD. The family lived in the Granville area and then moved to the Roswell, SD area between the years 1900-1904.

6. Nicolaus born 29 December 1869 in Germany died 21 May 1955 in Le Mars, IA. He married Anna Maria Malgot 14 September 1897 in Granville, IA. Anna born 23 June 1874 in Elkador, IA died 19 March 1954 in Le Mars, IA. Niclous and Anna had eleven children. Catherine Mary born 17 October 1898 in IA died 2 January 2002 in Alton, IA married Nicholas Joseph Didler 21 August 1923 in Granville. They had four children. Anna Mary born 30 August 1899 in Granville, IA died 6 January 2000 in Le Mars, IA. Adela Mary born 18 August 1900 in Granville, IA died 4 September 1917 in Granville, IA. Mary Elizabeth born 23 August 1901 in Granville, IA died 12 July 1939 in Fleming, CO. Mary Elizabeth married Joseph Theodore Hoefler 1 June 1926 in Granville, IA. They had six children before Mary Elizabeth and her youngest passed away shortly after the babies birth. Mathias Joseph born 21 July 1902 in Granville, IA died 19 July 1978 in Enid, OK. Mathias married Elizabeth and they had one son. Mary Rose (Sister Mary Rose OSF) born 19 June 1903 in Granville, IA died 19 March 1999 in Dubuque, IA. Mary Philomina (Sister Mary Adella) born July 30 1904 in Granville, IA died 9 March 1991 in St. Louis, Missouri. Mary Frances born 25 April 1906 in Granville, IA died 20 March 1978 in Perry, OK. She married Emil Edmind Wagner 29 July 1930 in Perry, OK. They had six children, two passing away as infants. Cecilia Mary (Sister Mary Irmina) born 7 May 1907 in Granville, IA died 5 September 2010 in Clyde, Missouri. Joseph Nicholas born 2 April 1908 in Granville, IA died 4 October 1999 in Granville, IA. He married Edna Paulsen 1 June 1939 and they had three daughters. William Francis born 7 December, 1909 in Granville, IA died 14 July 1993 in Le Mars, IA. He married Luella Anna Kobberman 1 June 1940 in Le Mars, IA. They had three daughters.

7. Maria Anna born 7 April 1874 in Germany, died 2 April 1911 in Granville, IA.

8. Peter Blatt born 14 September 1875 in Germany died 18 September 1875 in Germany.

Hubert was born in the village of Palzem, Regierungs-Bezirk Trier, Germany, to Hubert Blatt Sr. and Maria Spanier. He married Barbara Junck (Jung or Young) in Palzem January 13, 1857.
The family immigrated to the United States in 1882, arriving in New York City March 20th on the "Rhynland" from Antwerp. They first lived in Cabrey, Kankakee County, Illinois until 1887 or 1888 when they moved to the Granville, Iowa area. In 1895 the family was living in Section 18 of Baker Township of O'Brien County but on the 1911 plat map of Baker Township they resided in S 1/2 of SE 1/4 Section 32.
Hubert and Barbara are believed to have had nine children, with two dying as infants.

Mrs. Barbara Blatt died at Granville of old age. She was born in Germany, came to America in 1881 and was 81 years old last March.
