Siege, Heinrich Frederick Johann 1872- 1954 & Wilhelmine Kruckenberg Family

This story was taken from pages 485-486 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

Heinrich Frederick Johann Siege was born April 8, 1872, at Mechanicsville, Iowa, in Cedar County (eastern Iowa). He was the eldest son of Frederick Carl Siege and Sophia (nee Lehrman) Siege. (See their Biography on this web page)

Wilhelmine Katharina Dorothea Kruckenberg was born April 1, 1873, at Lowden, Iowa, in Cedar County (eastern Iowa). She was the ninth child of Johann Joachim Kruckenberg and Catharina Dorothea (nee Buchholz) Kruckenberg.

Johann was born May 29, 1831, in Stadorf, near Ebstorf, Province Hannover, Germany. He was the son of Johann Heinrich Kruckenberg and Anna Margaretha (nee Kien) Kruckenberg from Stadorf. He died November 12, 1902, and is buried at Lowden, Iowa.

Catharina was born December 6, 1833, in Bode, near Ebstorf, Province Hannover, Germany. She was the daughter of George Ludwig Buchholz and Anna Marie (nee Burig) Buchholz from Bode. She died December 10, 1911, and is buried at Lowden.

Wilhelmine’s parents were married in Germany on May 17, 1857, and came to America that same year arriving November 2, on the ship Dorette. They settled in DuPage County in Illinois. In 1868 they moved to Lowden, Iowa, and purchased the farm on which the fourth generation Kruckenbergs are presently living.

Henry and Wilhelmine attended Lutheran parochial school in Lowden, Iowa, and were confirmed together on April 3, 1877.

At the age of 17, on March 17, 1890, Henry came by train to Maurice, Iowa, with his parents, brother and sisters.

On May 26, 1898, Henry and Wilhelmine were married. The Lowden News (Lowden, Iowa) on May 31, 1898, gave the following account of their marriage. Henry Siege, an excellent young man from Sioux County, and Miss Wilhelmine Kruckenberg were united in wedlock, at the Lutheran Church. The bride is one of the finest girls known here and Mr. Siege, who comes well recommended, appears to be deserving of such a prize. The young couple will shortly go to occupy their farm in Sioux County.

The newlyweds settled in a four room cottage, which was built for them on the NW¼ of Section 26, Range 45, Township 94, in Sherman Township. In the fall of 1909, they remodeled their cottage and made it a two story, eleven room home. They lived there, their entire lives.

To this union five children were born. Selma Dorothea Sophia was born April 7, 1904; Sylvester Johann Frederick, January 12, 1907; Sidonia Wilhelmine, September 9, 1908; Silas Henrich, January 26, 1910; Sylvia Maria, January 11, 1914.

The children attended Sherman Township School #1, in Section 36.

Selma never married. She lived in Ireton, California, and Chicago, and the last fifty five years of her life on the family farm.

Sylvester never married. He lived on the family farm his entire life and worked there until his health failed.

Sidonia married Andy Onken of Ireton, Iowa, on February 4, 1931, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ireton, Iowa. They had four children: Loyce, Lennis, Larue and Lamont. They resided on a farm southeast of Ireton, Iowa.

Silas married Luella Vander Hamm of Ireton, Iowa, on July 9, 1936, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ireton, Iowa. They had three children: Roma, Larry and Leo. They resided on a farm southeast of Maurice.

Sylvia married Marion Chapman of Maurice, Iowa, on November 26, 1935, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ireton, Iowa. They had two children: Merry Eileen and Marc. They resided on a farm north of Seney, Iowa.

Henry and Wilhelmine were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Reading Township, Ireton, Iowa. Wilhelmine was a charter member of the St. John’s Ladies Guild. All five of their children were baptized and confirmed there, three were married there and the oldest four are buried there. Sylvia is buried in Memorial Cemetery in LeMars, Iowa.

In 1943, Wilhelmine suffered a hip fracture and remained bedfast until her death on February 20, 1945.

Henry continued to make his home with Selma and Sylvester. He suffered from failing health, due to Parkinson disease and died March 27, 1954. Henry and Wilhelmine are buried at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Reading Township, Ireton, Iowa.

On August 4, 1955, Sylvester died. Silas died March 8, 1964, and Sidonia died May 4, 1971. Selma died to the day, twenty four years after Silas (March 8, 1988). Sylvia died March 9, 1989.

Although the children of Henry and Wilhelmine are deceased, some of their grandchildren continue to make their home in the area. The family farm is owned by some of them.
