Schreur, John 1871-1943 & Nellie Meylink Family

This story was taken from pages 479A-480 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

John Schreur was born December 11, 1871, and died August 7, 1943. Nellie (Meylink) Schreur was born June 21, 1882, and died in 1927.

John Schreur was born in Zeeland, Michigan, in a log cabin. He was one of ten children, five of which were born in a log cabin, and five in a home. Nellie (Meylink) Schreur was born on a farm northwest of Maurice, where Peter De Jager’s used to live. She was married there, and four of her children were born there. In 1918, they moved to the farm two miles west of Maurice. John Schreur died in the Union Station in Chicago, enroute by train to visit relatives in Michigan. He died of an apparent heart attack.

John Schreur was a son of Arend Schreur and Gertie Kleinjans.

Their family consisted of: Dick – died at age 19 of appendicitis; Jennie (Schreur) married Kroodsma; John Schreur married Nellie Meylink; Herman married Minnie Kleinhesselink and lived in Orange City; Gerrit married Jennie Gelder; Hattie (Schreur) De Roo – died during childbirth; Walter married Jennie Smits and lived near Alton; Zena (Schreur) Vreeke; George married Lizzie (Stevens?); and Gertrude (Schreur) Meylink who later married Andrew Gelder.

John and Nellie Schreur’s children were: Ted born April 12, 1902, and died January 28, 1961; married Jeanette Bolluyt, born June 5, 1900, and died June 29, 1956. Gertrude was born April 4, 1904, and died December 5, 1980, married on February 15, 1928, to Dick De Jong born April 14, 1898, and died March 10, 1975. Susan was born October 22, 1907, and died May 17, 1978, married Bert Bolluyt, born November 11, 1897, and died April 15, 1987. Agnes was born September 5, 1911, and died January 27, 1988, married Norman Oftedahl, born? and died?. Nelson was born March 24, 1918 and married Johanna Vis on April 29, 1947.

Daughter, Gertrude De Jong, tells of her Grandpa Meylink walking to LeMars with a sack of wheat on his back, having it ground there into flour, and walking home again. Also, they would gather up dried cow dung and bring it into the house and burn it for fuel. (Grandpa Meylinks). During that time, as the country was entirely open prairie, there were no trees (only along rivers) to cut down and use for fuel. Maurice’s “Dr. Oggel” delivered Gertrude (Schreur) De Jong, and Grandpa Schreur went into town to get the doctor, and traveled by horse and buggy.

Arend Schreur, father of John, plowed with oxen. They had sheep and he sheared his own sheep, and Arend’s wife spun the wool, dyed it, and Arend knitted the socks for the five older children.

Every Saturday, grandsons of John Schreur, Pierce and John De Jong, would walk the two miles west to the Schreur farm, and spend the day there, and Nelson Schreur would then bring them home in the evening. Gertrude (Schreur) De Jong would watch her sons walking west until they were out of sight.
