Funeral services for Dr. Joseph B. White, 76, Davenport, were held Aug. 18, 1989 at Newcomb Presbyterian church, Davenport, with burial in the Davenport Memorial Park.
Dr. White died Aug. 15 of an apparent heart attack, suffered while he was at a sawmill he owned in Cedar county, south of Interstate 80.
He was a 1934 graduate of Monmouth college and received a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Iowa State in 1942. He married Dorothy McCreight in 1938 in Marissa, Ill.
He was widely known as a veterinarian and active supporter of education. He had been president of the Davenport Area Education Agency and former Scott county boards of education.
He had been an instructor at the school of veterinary medicine at Iowa State University before opening his practice in Davenport. He owned and operated Whitehaven Animal hospital from 1943 to 1978.
He also owned and operated the sawmill and Christmas tree farm beginning in 1978.
Dr. White became a member of the Davenport school board in 1959. While still a member in 1963 he was elected to the Scott County school board. He gave up the Davenport seat in 1964 after an Iowa Supreme Court decision that he could not belong to both.
He was also a former president of the county board, which eventually merged into the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency. He was the first president of the AEA formed in 1975 and he retired from the board in 1976.
Dr. White was a member of the Newcomb Presbyterian church, Varsity club and Sons of the American Revolution. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and photography.
He is survived by his wife; 3 sons, Kenny, Davenport; Rob, Eldridge and Dave, Kailua, Hawaii; 6 grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Edward (Joella) Beimfohr, Short Hills, N.J.
