WILLIAM HOERSCH.

AMONG the younger lawyers of Davenport no one probably stands higher than William Hoersch, the subject of this biography. Being of a logical and analytical turn of mind and of active mental temperament, he was attracted to the law as a profession, and his success thus far clearly indicates that his choice was a wise one. He was born on a farm north of Wolcott in Scott County, June 30, 1861, and there spent the first two years of his life. In 1863 his parents removed to Davenport, where William has resided ever since.

He obtained his early education in the public schools of this city, and so persistent was he in his efforts to acquire knowledge and so attentive to his studies that at the age of eighteen he graduated from the high school with honor. Entering the office of Stewart & White he read law for two years, and after close application to his studies at the end of that time entered the law department of the State University of Iowa, from which institution he graduated with high honor in June, 1882.

In the spring of 1883 he opened a law office in this city and commenced the practice of his chosen profession, and by his ability and faithful attention to the interests of his clients has built up for himself a large and lucrative practice.

John J. Hoersch, the father of William , was born in the Kingdom of Würtemberg, Germany, August 15, 1827. In 1849 he decided to come to the United States, and sailing from Lavre de Grace, France, after a voyage of thirty-seven days landed in New York. He remained there a short time and then moved to Ohio and worked on a farm for about, two years. In the year 1851 he came to Davenport, and being favorably impressed with the location, climate and people of Scott County decided to remain here. Shortly after his arrival he purchased land in Blue Grass Township, which he improved and sold, and his success in this venture led him to continue buying, improving and selling farms until the year 1862, when he retired from active life and came to Davenport to live.

In 1854 he was married to Miss Mary Hausman, a native of Aselfingen, Germany, and the result of this union was four daughters and one son, William Hoersch. William Hoersch was married to Miss Amelia Petersen October 29, 1890. She is the daughter of August Petersen of the firm of Knostman, Petersen & Co., and is a lady of many accomplishments, and is held in high esteem by those who have the pleasure of her acquaintance.

Mr. Hoersch is a lawyer of high character, keen perceptions and first - class qualifications for the conduct of litigation. He is genial and affable in manner, a staunch friend, and a man whose word is always as good as his bond, under whatever circumstances it may be given.
