On August 21, 1936, Duane Ray Veit was born to David and Dolores (Winker) Veit in Milford, Iowa. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Odebolt, Iowa. Duane attended St. Martin’s Catholic School in Odebolt through the 8th grade, then transferred to Odebolt Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1954.
Following graduation, Duane began a life-long love for farming with his parents southeast of Odebolt. After farming, he drove truck for Mau Trucking in Ida Grove, Iowa, and later as a school bus driver for Odebolt-Arthur Community Schools. He married Freida Miller on March 2, 1957. They raised four children, Sue, Randy, Sandy, and Linda. They later parted ways. He also helped with the flower shop they owned in Ida Grove.
He moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1999, where he married the love of his life, April Wittrock, on August 4, 2001. While in Cedar Rapids, he worked at HandiMart Convenience Stores and Murdoch Funeral Homes. They moved back to Odebolt in 2008, where he drove for the regional transit systems. Duane will be most remembered as the community photographer, capturing special moments at area schools, town events, and family celebrations. His pictures were published weekly in The Chronicle and he lovingly shared prints with his family and friends.
Duane enjoyed attending school activities and events of his children and grandchildren, always with a camera in hand. Over the years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and collecting pedal tractors, farm toys, and Grain Belt Beer memorabilia. Duane and April loved traveling, especially to Mexico in the winter and meeting Duane’s siblings in Las Vegas. Their last big trip was out West visiting many states and family and friends along the way.
He also appreciated keeping in touch with his high school classmates, often sending them updates on happenings and, of course, pictures. And, lastly, his “boys” must be mentioned, the fattest backyard squirrels! They had a constant supply of the best Iowa corn and were well-trained on feeding time.
Duane is survived by his wife of 21 years, April; children, Sue (Jay) Hemer of Arthur, Iowa, Randy (Kim) Veit of Ida Grove, Iowa, Sandy (Bruce) Lorenzen of Arthur, Linda (Leland) Belew of Granger, Iowa, Jacob (Ethan Olson) Wittrock of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Christie (Michael) Kolpin of Arthur; 15 grandchildren; 26 plus three on-the-way great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings, Rosalie (Bill) Waddingham of Garner, Iowa, Davie (Karen) Veit of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; and sister-in-law, Ann Veit of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rick; and a niece, Deb Waddingham.
