Infant Is Killed
Coroner's Jury Finds That It Came to Its Death by Being Hit on the Head With a Rock Thrown by Wm. DOSS
A distressingly sad accidental death occurred Monday evening at the home of J.A. BUTTS in Union township directly north of Beaconsfield, when his infant grandchild died from the effects of a blow upon the head by a rock thrown, so it is reported, by Wm. DOSS, a neighbor who lived about a mile north of BUTTS. The reports received by phone seem to be a little bit contradictory in regard to the origin of the quarrel which led up to the rock throwing. But a quarrel ensued and the rock was thrown, the infant in its mother's arms being the innocent victim. No one for a moment believes that Mr. DOSS meant any harm to the child as he is regarded as a peaceable and law abiding citizen, but the mother and child seemed to have got in the way. The accident occurred at about 4 o'clock in the afternoon and the child died about 6 in the evening. Sheriff TERRILL came up and arrested Mr. DOSS, and took him to Mt. Ayr where he waived preliminary examination. Coroner Dr. HORNE held an inquest Tuesday afternoon, and the grand jury began immediately to investigate the case.
The verdict of the coroner's jury was that the infant came to its death as the result of being hit on the head with a rock thrown by Wm. DOSS.
As soon as the accident happened Dr. J.H. GOAD of Ellston was summoned, but the babe was past medical skill, and died as stated two hours after being injured.
Both Messrs. DOSS and BUTTS are well-to-do and highly respected farmers of Union township, and the affair is greatly deplored by the entire community. The Vindicator has endeavored to give just the plain facts of the case without sensational coloring and with strict impartiality to all parties concerned.
