WILLIAM WILSON "BILLIE" FINCH

William Wilson "Billie" FINCH was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri, on November 3, 1898, the son of William and Bessie (CONGER) FINCH. He grew up in Humeston, Wayne County, Iowa, with his siblings Paul, Gladys, Jessie, and Pearl. His high school years were interrupted when he served with the Iowa National Guard on the Mexican border from 1915-1917. He was called into service with the American Expeditionary Forces of the Rainbow Division during World War 1.

Billie came to Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa, in 1920 where he established Finch Produce Company, selling wholesale poultry and eggs until he retired in 1962. Billie helped many local people out by giving them a job and helping them financially during hard times. Many remember Billie for his strict dedication to the proper methods of handling merchandise and attending to the business.

Billie and Velma BIERBOWER of Des Moines were married in 1936.

Billie was an avide sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a devoted trapshooter, winning many awards. His most coveted trophy was the one he won in 1958 after he had lost half of his vision in his left eye.

Billie loved playing bridge. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a 66-year member of the Masonic Order. He was a Knight Templar, a member of Faith Lodge #179 A.F. and A.M., and a life member of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.

Upon his retirement Billie spent many hours feeding homeless dogs. He loved dogs and the feeling was mutual. As much as he loved dogs, he loved children. He loved to surprise them with tootsie rolls, especially making the children think that they came out of their ears.

Billie died on August 8, 1986 at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, and was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa.
