DEATH of CAPT. SCOTT

Died, Thursday, July 12, 1894, Captain Thomas Empson SCOTT, at the home of his son J. L. SCOTT in Kellerton, Iowa, aged 81 years, 6 months and 11 days. Capt. SCOTT was born in Virginia, January 11, 1813, and came from the same family stock as did Gen. Winfield S. SCOTT, of Mexican war fame. He moved to Highland county, Ohio, when about nine years old. In 1832, when nineteen years old, he was married to Miss Elinor MOORE. Mr. SCOTT lived many years in Tippecanoe county, Indiana, and during the famous Washingtonian temperance movement that swept over the country in the decade from 1810 to 1850, he became somewhat noted as a temperance lecturer. He had many calls to speak, and was popular as a temperance advocate. To the last he sung the good old temperance songs of that period. He was a good speaker and full of anecdotes.

In 1862, he enlisted in the 116th Indiana volunteers, and was made captain of a company. He was noted as a brave officer, a good soldier, and as one who never faltered in the line of duty. He continued in the service until the close of the war, participated in many battles, and endured many trials.

After the war he came west to start in life. He was in Kansas for a short time and then came to Kellerton in this county. In 1882 he took an active part in the amendment campaign and has often in many ways made himself useful.

The funeral on Friday was largely attended by old soldier friends. Rev. Mr. WATKINS conduced the service, the G.A.R. used the ritualistics torms, and Captain SCOTT was buried with military honors. The pall bearers were John MILLER, J.M. JOHNSON, G. McDONALD, G. SPEARS, D. B. MARSHALL, and R. B. BULLARD. A long procession attended the remains to the Egley [Merritt] cemetery, where they were laid to rest beside his wife who had passed on before him. Captain SCOTT leaves children and many friends, who will mourn his departure. He was remarkable for his constant cheerfulness and good humor, and enjoyed seeing others happy. A model soldier and a good citizen has passed away.

NOTE: Capt. Thomas E. SCOTT'S gravestone states he was born 11 Jan 1813 and died 12 Jul 1894.
