Goshen News
Goshen is on the move. Mr. Charles Dayton has moved his dwelling to Diagonal. Mr. Had Hersom has moved one of his buildings and is moving the other to Diagonal. The recent rains have stopped the movers for several days. The Lumber Company is moving its building, formerly the Gazette office, to Diagonal. All Goshen is anxious to move but we will still hold the post office, the depot, the stock yards, and the grain house of Miller’s, the church and school house. Goshen’s inhabitants, buildings, etc., will move, but the country around Goshen will not. Our two grocery and dry goods stores will go to Diagonal, but what will that amount to? They could not hold their trade at Goshen, how can they, expect it to follow them to Diagonal? Clearfield has received not a little trade that belonged to Goshen for several years. Now she will receive all the trade between the two rivers, except the trade of the country within a radius of about one and one-half miles west of Diagonal. What, then, is left for Diagonal? The rich country east and south of Diagonal, while to the north they will have strong competition with the Knowlton merchants. The fact is they are leaving a rich strip of country twelve miles long north and south and from four to six miles east and west, and gaining nothing but the trade of the brushites. A good general dry goods and grocery store would pay in Goshen after the Diagonal boomers leave. Clearfield voted $100 to be spent on the roads toward Goshen. The H. & S. Railroad Company is laying the side track in Diagonal, and will put the old Kew depot there.
