Yeoman Lorrie Haver was born and raised in Wisconsin. She joined the United States Navy in 1951; completed basic military and Yeoman (Administrative Assistant) training at Bainbridge, MD.
Lorrie was then assigned to the staff at the Officer Candidate School at Newport, RI where she worked on payroll and officer candidate records techinician.
Lorrie was then sent to Tokyo, Japan where she was assigned to the United Nations and Far East Command Headquarters in Tokyo. She was assigned the duties as receptionist for all the Generals and Admirals assigned to headquarters.
One very special duty Lorrie performed for the Generals was to watch for them to come to the top of the stairs and start down. Lorrie took that as a signal to push a button that warned the Marine guards that the boss was on his way and to get his car and driver up front.
Lorrie received numerous positive comments from the "Stars" for her efforts. Lorrie will never know how important her job was to the war effort in Korea because of the high security in the building where she worked.
Lorrie left the Navy in 1955 and came back to Van Meter, IA where she lived until 1969. Lorrie then moved to Mount Ayr in 1969 and took the position as Director of Hospital Purchasing for the Ringgold County Hospital for 17 years. Lorrie retired from her hospital position in 1993 and currently enjoys many community activities but is especially active in the Mount Ayr American Legion.
