Kathy Fleener, 66, of Grinnell, died on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center, under the care of hospice. Funeral services for Kathy will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, October 28, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Visitation with the family present will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be designated to Grinnell Regional Hospice.
Kathryn Margaret Fleener was born on November 14, 1945, to Lee and Margaret Feige Connor in Chariton, Iowa. They later moved to Grinnell, where she graduated Grinnell High School in 1963.
On June 19, 1963, she married her high school sweetheart, Donald Fleener. She worked as a bookkeeper for her father, the sale barn and eventually for their farm. Kathy enjoyed making fudge and baking red velvet cake and Christmas cookies. You couldn't turn the channel if NASCAR, especially Tony Stewart, bull riding or any sports were on. Kathy loved to entertain, play cards, listening to music, dancing and shopping. She would pay the grandkids for neck and foot rubs. Kathy's love for her family was endless and the little things she did for Don, her children and grandchildren will be missed.
Kathy is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Don, of Grinnell; three daughters, Kris (Clint) Vonk of Sully, Karin (Rich) Jones of Grinnell and Debbie Smith of Brooklyn; four grandchildren, Kasey (Bart) Zylstra, Makayla Jones, Lexie and Nathan Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Joann Meyers and brother, Larry Connor.
