August 27, 1946Betty Kitchen Becomes Bride Of Californian
Mrs. Clyde Kitchen, 4416 University avenue, Des Moines, formerly of Carroll, announces the marriage of her daughter, Betty Marie, to Elmer Wallace Younger, jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Younger, 7876 Airlane avenue, Los Angeles, Calif.
The ceremony took place at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, August 25, in Grace Methodist church, Des Moines, with the Rev. W. M. Briggs reading the double ring service.
Dr. Claire C. Kitchen of Oskaloosa gave his sister in marriage. Mrs. Brown, Grace church organist, played the traditional wedding marches.
Miss Marion Cook of Des Moines formerly of Carroll, was soprano soloist. She sang “Because” and I Love Thee”.
The bride had three attendants. Miss Beverly McConnell was her maid of honor, and Mrs. Neal Wright and Mrs. Merle L. Kitchen, sister-in-law of the bride, were bridesmaids.
The bride’s gown was fashioned with a round net yoke, tight bodice, buttoned down the back, long sleeves with points over the hands and short train. She wore a fingertip veil and carried an all-white bouquet of gardenias and gladioli.
Her attendants were dressed in shades of green and blue, with net yokes and tight bodices. Their pink bouquets were arranged like the bride’s.
Merle L. Kitchen, brother of the bride, was best man, Dr. Carl R. Kitchen, another brother, D. Lillard, Neal Wright and Floyd Hardie ushered.
Deanna Lillard was the flower girl.
The church chapel was decorated with large baskets of white gladioli and white candles in candelabra.
One hundred guests were entertained at a reception in the church parlors after the ceremony. A yellow centerpiece decorated the bridal table.
Relatives and friends from Atlantic and Carroll were guests at the wedding and reception. Carroll friends present were Mrs. Edward Krause and daughter, LuJean, and Mrs. Merle Vetter.
After a wedding trip through the southwest to California, Mr. and Mrs. Younger will live at 7876 Airlane avenue, Los Angeles, where they will be at home after September 1. For traveling, the bride chose a melon gabardine dress with black accessories and white gloves.
Mrs. Younger, who attended Carroll high school while living here, was graduated from Roosevelt high school, Des Moines in 1942. She has been employed as receptionist in Younkers’ credit department.
Mr. Younger, who was graduated from Roosevelt high school in 1940, has had two years in engineering at Iowa State college, Ames. At the time of his release from the air corps, he held the rank of first lieutenant. He served as radar control officer on a P-16, having seen duty in the Italian and China-Burma-India theaters. He is now a salesman for Pontiac Motor Sales in Los Angeles.
