Davenport Daily Republic – April 4, 1897
An Ottumwa special says: The dead body of Wm. F. Sergent, 20 years old, was found at the bottom of a coal shaft at Seymour this morning. He was last seen with two tamps last night. He had a large sum of money in his possession, which was missing from the body. The coroner’s jury returned a verdict of murder. The tramps escaped. Letters indicated that the deceased was the son of J. P. Sergent, a prominent clothing merchant of Des Moines.
