Des Moines, Sept. 4. – The western bound train on the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Road, leaving here at 4 o’clock this evening, when near Coone River the bank gave way, caused by the recent heavy rains. The baggage car and three coaches were precipitated down the embankment. A brakeman named John Hughes was instantly killed, he falling under the rear car as it turned over, and was literally ground up. Great excitement prevailed. The train was running slowly, or the loss of life would doubtless be fearful.
