Marvin is a lively little town situated on the I. C. R. R., situated 227 miles west of Dubuque, in Pocahontas County. It is situated in rich farming country that is being improved very fast just now by the poor “Homesteaders,” of which all your readers have heard so much; and I think whoever so lives to see this country ten years hence will see one of the finest farming of the districts. The almost entire absence of timber in part of the country has brought the farming community to see the necessity of setting out timber. The consequence is that thousands of acres of timber have been set out this spring in Northwestern Iowa, which in a few years will be very ornamental to the country and will also take the sharp edge off our prairie winds, the homesteaders are now insensible to the luxuries derived from plenty of fruit, and almost all have set out apple and other fruit trees, though some “croakers” say that fruit cannot be raised out here. Wheat and oat promise a large yield. Corn is rather backward, owing the favorableness of the season.

There is a great deal of breaking here this year.

The business firms of Marvin are Samuel Hughes and Bushy Bros., dealers in dry goods and groceries; E. O. Wilder, dealer in drugs, medicines, books, and stationary – also preforms the duties as postmaster; William Marshall, hardware and machinery; George Fairburn, express and freight agent – dealer in lumber; W. R. Tysdal, boots and shoe maker; P. Ibson, blacksmith – and a better never swung a hammer; Hay & Tysdal of the “Marvin Hotel,” and Charley Skinner, of the ”Farmers Home,” attends to the wants of the traveling public.
