PATRICK AND ANN SHERLOCK FAMILY

Patrick M. Sherlock was born near Lucan, Ontario, Canada in 1845. His parents had emigrated from Ireland. As a young man, he was working on Patrick Casey’s wheat farm when he met his future wife, Ann. She had come from Ireland as a baby with her parents. They were married in 1865.

In 1868, Patrick and Ann came to Dubuque, Iowa, looking for work. He worked on the railroad at first, then had a job in the coal mines at Coalville near Fort Dodge. In 1870, the filed for a homestead in Great Oak Township, three miles east of Ayrshire. His uncle, James Sherlock, had filed for a homestead near there a few months before. His brother, Timothy, and his mother, Margaret Slattery, had also filed for homesteads in the same area. There were no trains yet in Palo Alto County but there was a stage route. The stage brought the mail to the James Sherlock farm, where a post office was established.

In 1894, the Sherlocks sold their farm and moved to Emmetsburg. About 1896 they came to Graettinger where Patrick worked as a farm laborer and was the janitor of Immaculate Conception Church and a caretaker of St. Jacob’s Cemetery. He and his wife are both buried there. Ann died in 1920 and Patrick died in 1928.

Patrick and Ann were the parents of eleven children: Timothy, born in 1868 and died in 1870; Sarah, born in 1869 and died in 1870; Timothy P., born in 1871 and died in 1907; Maggie, born in 1872 and married to James Donovan and died in 1899; Molly, born in 1876, married to James Boyle and died in 1914. They were the parents of Mae Suss.

Kate, born in 1878, married to James J. O’Rourke and died in 1958; Jack, born in 1880, married Lyla Herberger and died in 1945; Sade, born in 1882, married to Bill Blom, town cop for many years and died in 1942.

Agnes, bon in 1884, married to Louis Johnson and died in 1962…Nell, born in 1886, married to James R. Brown, and died in 1955. They were parents of Bill and Tom Brown of this area; and Francis, born in 1888 and died in 1899.
