Services Held For Mrs. Peter Graves

Services were held from the Walton Funeral Home on Wednesday of last week for Mrs. Peter Graves, former Sibley resident. Dr. M.P. Arrasmith, pastor of the Methodist church, was in charge of the services. Interment was made in West Holman cemetery.

Mary Emma Kroll was born in Germany Sept. 4, 1866, and died in the University hospital, Iowa City, on Sunday morning, Oct. 3. She was denied the care of loving parents due to the fact that her mother died when she was but a few weeks old and her father, after bringing her to America, died when she was six months old. From that time she was reared in the home of an aunt near Iowa City.

When 19 years old she was united in marriage to Edward Umbarger at Marengo, Iowa. Following their marriage they farmed near Marengo and Williamsburg. Later they moved to Sibley, where the husband died in the year 1914.

She was again married to Peter Graves June 2, 1924, at Sibley. The following year they moved to Traer, Iowa, where Mr. Graves was employed as section foreman by the Rock Island Ry. Co. until his retirement four years ago.

She is survived by her husband and three sons: Thomas, Bruce and Dr. Harry H. Umbarger of Grand Junction, Colo.; one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Rogentien of Lime Springs died eight years ago. She also leaves two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, besides four stepsons, Bert Graves, Larchwood, Clyde Graves, Sioux Falls, Harold Graves, Ashton, and Clarence Graves, a war prisoner of the Japanese in Manchukp.

She was for many years a member of the Methodist church and always held the church in high esteem and reverence. She possessed an abiding faith in God. She will be remembered as a good neighbor, loving mother and a faithful wife.
