SERVICES ARE HELD FOR CHARLES NICOLA.

Burial Clear Lake, S.D. Where County Legion Posts Paid Last Honors

Funeral services were held at Clear Lake, S. Dak., August 20, for Charles Nicola, age 58, former well known Melvin resident, who died in a tractor accident southeast of Clear Lake on August 17.

Over 500 people attended the funeral services at the Clear Lake auditorium. Officiating pastors were Rev. Ernset Burch of Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church of Clear Lake. Rev. B.O. Solberg of Highland Lutheran Church, Brandt, S.D., assisted by Chaplain N.A. Dobie of the Clear Lake American Legion Post.

At graveside rites in Lakeview cemetery, Clear Lake, the firing squads of various Legion Posts of the county and the Legion had charge of the service. Burial was in Lakeview cemetery.

During his life Mr. Nicola was very active in many organizations in the county. At his death he was president of the Brandt school board, president of the Eastern Dakota baseball league, which he helped organize in 1941, chairman of the Boy Scout committee of Brandt, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Brandt Co-op Creamery, Commander of the Deuel County Legion Posts and a member of the 40 and 8, also a member of the board of directors of the Farm Home Administration of Deuel County. He was a Past Commander and Adjutant of the Brandt Legion Post and a past state chairman of the FHA.

Charles Wilbur Nicola who farmed one-half mile north of Brandt at his death and for 25 years in the vicinity of Brandt, was born at Sanborn, Iowa, October 16, 1896. He was united in marriage to Anna Haiker at Sibley, Iowa. She died in January 1935.

On October 16,1937, he was united to Hilda Rost at Clear Lake.

Mr. Nicola was a veteran of World War I, when he enlisted in the service September 5, 1918, and served the 1st Forestry Replacement Battalion Casualty Detachment 5th Co. He was discharged on February 24, 1919.

He is survived by his widow and four daughters. They are: Mrs. Erling (Mary Elaine) Anderson of Brandt, Mrs. Harris (Arlene May) Berger, Orlando, Fla.; Janice Faye and Carol Jean. He leaves 3 grandchildren also in addition to four brothers and six sisters. They are: Art of Clear Lake, Archie of Brandt; Victor and Homer of Melvin; Mrs. Mabel Mohr, Minneapolis; Mrs. Minnie Rubsam, Brandt, Mrs. Gladys Wilson, Harris, Mrs. Geneva Pratt, Spencer, and Myrtle Nicola, Cherokee, Iowa.

His parents, first wife and two brothers preceded him in death.

Many relatives from this area were in attendance at the services.
