Former Resident Dies in South Dakota

Louis Haiker, age 75, died at his home at Clear Lake, S.D., Thursday, March 19, following a six week's illness of bronchial pneumonia. Funeral services were conducted Sunday from the home and Evangelical Lutheran church of which he was a charter member. Burial was made at Clear Lake. Rev. H.A. Schultz had charge of the rites and his sermon was based on "The Saviour's Comforting Promise in Death," taken from Luke 23-43. Two songs "Jesus Christ My Sure Defense," and "Beautiful Saviour," were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Ted Roseland, Mrs. R.L. Chambers and Arthur Peterson, accompanied by Mrs. Walter Begalka, at the organ. Pallbearers were William Meyers, H. Klemm, H. Paulson, George Mangels, Walter Begalka and George Bader.

All of the children, with the exception of George Haiker, who is in California, were present at the funeral.

Mr. Haiker had many friends, was considerate to all he knew and he will be greatly missed by both his family and the many who knew him.

Louis Haiker was born October 6, 1866, the son of Joseph and Frances Haiker of Miglitz, Austria. He was left fatherless at the age of 11 and at that age started as an apprentice in a shoe shop in Miglitz, Austria, where he learned to make and repair shoes. At the age of 19 he volunteered to the Austrian army, where he spent eight years and became a Sergeant of the Infantry. He was wed to Anna Breckle of Miglitz, May 10, 1885.

In 1889, he came to this country and lived near Sibley where he resided for 27 years. In 1924 he moved to Deuel county, South Dakota. He was engaged in farming and in later years he established a shoe shop in Clear Lake.

Surviving are six daughters and three sons. They are Albert and Herman of Minneapolis; Mrs. Art Nicola of Harris; Mrs. Hugo Strohscheim of Clear Lake, S.D., Mrs. J.A Frankel, Mrs. Martin Johnson and Mrs. Helen Pressey of Chicago, George Haiker, Inglewood, Calif., and Mrs. Joe Black of Clear Lake and 13 grandchildren.

Three daughters, two sons and five grandchildren preceded him in death. Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Nicola and daughters of Brandt, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. Merle Anderson of Harris, Mrs. F.J. Breckle and Marquerite, George Breckle, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Breckle, all of Sibley; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Breckle of Bigelow and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Gresil of Astoria, S.D.
