Long Time Resident Dies at Iowa City

Martin Schreiber, a long time resident of Osceola county, passed away August 22 at the Iowa City hospital.

The funeral was held August 24th at Brighton, Ia., where he had lived the past nine years with his two sisters, Mary and Nemily Schreiber.

Mr. Schreiber was the fourth child of the thirteen children of Mary and Jacob Schreiber. He was born May 29, 1861, and came when an infant to live in Grundy county near Ackly, Iowa, where he grew to manhood.

He was a man of sterling character and friend to all who knew him. There are left to mourn his loss, 2 brothers, Henry of Seward, Ill., Albert and Ed of Winnepeg and 2 sisters, Mary and Nemily Schreiber of Brighton.

He was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery at Brighton, Ia.

Old timers will recall that Martin Schreiber was with a party of surveyors who made a survey for the BCR&N Railway through here in 1881, from Iowa Falls to Watertown, S. Dak. This route was chosen through Sibley, after three other surveys had been made here. The CRI&P Railway now runs over this route.

Jacob Schreiber, father of Martin Schreiber was an early county surveyor in Grundy county. The Schreiber family arrived here from Ackley more thsn 50 years ago, just a day after the family of Harm Feldkamp arrived here to locate.

Among those from away to attend the funeral services were Mrs. Rose Dahl and Mrs. E.W. Brand, nieces of Mr. Schreiber, who came from Minneapolis.

~Transcriber's Note: Obituary states that Martin Schreiber had two brothers but newspaper listed three. Find a Grave shows only Henry as a brother. His mother is noted as Mary Ann Obrecht.
